thanks Kev :)

There was a guy called Ng in one of my classes and the tutor used to **** him off senseless by calling him N.G.

Kev beat me to it... the first name I thought of when I saw your post was Charles Ng.
What are you reading, clarabel ?

Hong Kong Belonger by Simon Barnes, Brachiopod.
i am glad that you asked this question, i had once to call someone in singapore withis name and i asked for miss NUG.

When I worked in an academic institution this was the commonest surname of the students I worked with (all Chinese, from various places such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore etc). When I first started I asked several how to pronounce it and they said that you shouldn't really put a vowel in front but go straight into the 'n', which isn't an easy concept to get hold of. I was told to try ung or ong and then soften the vowel and that would be close enough.
