I have a seven year old German Shepherd bitch. I counted her breathing rate this evening, and it was between 10 and 12 breaths per minute. I thought dogs should breathe something like 20 times per minute and am just a little concerned at the slow rate. Any ideas please folks?

Should be between 16 and 30 while RESTING. Could be less when in a deep sleep. Dog's condition is another factor. If in doubt, you know where to take her. (°¿°)
Not sure about the rate of dogs like that, but do know how to increase my breathing and heart rate. Put me in with some German Sheperd dogs, as I am terrified of them, as well at Rottweillers. Any other ABers share this fear, and am I being unduly yellow here?

Sorry I can not be of more help.
Hi Mr -H, im studying a diploma in animal management, and i have studied veterinary nursing. The respiration rate for a dog ranges from 10 to 30 breaths per minute. So your dog is well within normal range. However if she is exibiting any signs of illness then you should consult your vet
Jonnyboy, I feel very sad that you are so terrified of German Shepherds and Rotties.
I would love you to meet my boy, who has a wonderful nature and loves everybody.
I am sure he could convince you that there is no need to be terrified of all dogs of these two breeds. However, my Lancashire Heelers (12" tall) would probably fang your ankles on site.
Or even sight! lol.
i sed to be frightened of all dogs (plus i thought them woofy, smelly and licky) However, since we got our dogs, i now love them
I went to someones house once and they had a German Shepherd teenager (still thought it was a puppy, but it was quite big.

It wanted to play, but it damn well hurt - and the more you pushed it away the more it fought. I can understand where Jonny is coming from, because if it really went for you, you wouldn't have a chance.
But this is not the fault of the dog or the breed, it is the fault of the owner for not training it to behave properly.
I am glad to hear you feel for me, lankeela, and hope you would be able to cure me of my fear. Perhaps we could have an ABer German Shepherd evening at your house, and we could all cure our fears there. I could cure people of their fear of water if you have a swimming pool, and also their fear of spiders.

What do you others think of this?
SPIDERS?????? No way!!!!!

Sorry about your problems with GSD's Doc but please dont put all the blame on the dogs, as Lankeela says most of the blame lies in bad handling. Last year I took Max to the Vets open surgery for his boosters and as I walked across the carpark a guy walking by said something about there must be a special offer on. When I entered the waiting room I saw what he meant as there were seven of us all with GSD of ages ranging from about 12 weeks to 12 years who all sat there without a bark or sign of trouble between them. One of the vets took a photo which now hangs on the waiting room wall with a little note to the effect that they wished all owners handled their dogs as well
PADDYWAK, I LOVE YOUR DOG AND WANT HIM! MY GSD WHO LOOKED JUST LIKE YOURS WAS THE MOST WONDEFUL DOG IN THE WORLD AND SO OBEDIENT. HE KNEW INSTANTLY WHETHER TO WELCOME A VISITOR AND SEND HIM PACKING. ACTUALLY I LOVED MY DOBERMAN AND WEIMARANER ALSO. DOGS ARE HOW THEIR OWNERS TEACH AND TREAT THEM
I'm sorry kustard but you can't have him, not only because he's my best buddy but because if I gave him away I would find myself homeless and disowned by all my family
