Transferring hard drive to a new computer

If I sell my current laptop and buy a new, higher spec model, what's the best way to transfer my hard drive contents to a new machine? By that I mean everything, music, photos, software, etc.

I think it would be hard to transfer the software: having the installation disks would be easier. The files can be burnt to CD: you do this already as backup, right?

it is impossible to transfere a windows instalation between to different specification computers as there will be serious driver issues the only way is to reinstall.
