I was just reading a book about the fourteenth century, which had a medieval joke:

First Merchant to second "Art thou married?

Second merchant "Indeed Sir, I was. I had three wives, but they all hanged themselves from a tree which groweth in my garden".

First Merchant: "Sir, I pray you, give unto me a cutting of this miraculous tree!"

Lol, reckon this joke was told one dark knight...
i would be, "Sir, i pray thee. . . " wouldn't it, i know they used you, but that was less formal wasn't it?
As first might have said to each of his wives:

"The curse God pronounced on your sex weighs still upon the world. You are guilty – you must bear its hardships. You are the Devil’s gateway".
But mcmouse their "Devilsgateway" is just so damned good!
Quite the opposite, Mollykins - ''you'' was more formal, and by the 14th C was expected, (unless you were family or friends).
