They have been around for a lot longer than the current boom would indicate.
Sarah Breedlove McWilliams Walker in 1905 invented then first system for straightening hair using hot combs and pomade along frequent shampooing.

Hot combs that straighten the hair have been around since invented by parisian Marcel Grateau in 1872 though they were marketed as a health aid and straightened hair was a side effect.
