Why does the hair go grey when we mature with age lol, and why do some people go grey young, is it in the genes ( and no i dont mean the denim ones :-) ).

Don't know Roughquest. And whose genes are stronger? Your mother's or your father's - or is the grey/white gene stronger than the dark gene?

My dad's family all went completely white from the age of 30 onwards, but my mum's family have kept their colour into their 70s. I am 30 and I only have one or two grey hairs - I still don't know which way I'll go!
I started to go grey at 21 and by 35 was totally silver but my parents kept their hair colour. My Grandmother went silver early so I think its hereditary and often things can miss a generation.
I am 67 and I still have my hair colour, BUT my beard has been white for almost 20 years now. You work it out.

Gosh, also why do only some strands of hair go white/grey? The plot thickens.....
I imagine that as the body gets older it is no longer able to produce the pigment required for colouring the hair, and the hair follicles break down one by one, just a guess!!
