For onion hands:
Roll fresh leaves of parsley between your hands. The parsley will neutralize the smell of onion.
Try rubbing your hands against the inside of a stainless steel sink, if you have one... if not use a stainless steel spoon and rub it over your hands including between the fingers. In fact, there's a "bar of soap" that's actually a bar of stainless steel shaped like soap available at cooking supply stores... works for me...
not 100% sure but i think i remember reading somewhere about rubbing whitevinegar into your hands. or rubbing salt into your hands too but i have never tried it :-)
oh and lemon juice too might work :-)

i'm trying them all right now - thanks guys.......
The steel 'bar of soap' sounds crazy, but I can assure everyone it does work, and not just for onions - best thing I've ever found for smelly hands.
lemon juice - pure fresh squeezed
White vinegar does the job, next time try to rub some in before you do onions and right after, it'll neutralise the smell very quickly.
clanad and catso...giving you three massive stars each (apologies angeldraws, I knwo it's not my question lol)!! After reading this I had to peel and chop loads of onions for dinner and tried your stainless steel sink trick. Worked brilliantly!!! Off to source one of those wee bars asap, as I use alot of garlic, onion and peppers so this would be very, very handy. thanks again folks :o) xx
Must work with any metal then because the only bit that is actually stainless steel on a so called 'stainless steel sink' is the plug hole :)
Hmmm, PhilBY, the entire sink is made of stainless, at least here in the U.S. Stainless steel is always made using chromium. The minimum amount of chromium used to make stainless steel is 10.5%; it is chromium that makes the steel stainless. Chromium also improves the corrosion resistance by forming a chromium oxide film on the steel. This very thin layer, when placed under the right conditions, can also be self-repairing.

There are other elements used to make stainless steel as well, including nickel, nitrogen and molybdenum. Bringing these elements together forms different crystal structures that enable a variety of properties in machining, welding and forming. It's this mixture of metals that must provide the odor removing properties I've noted.

There are four major types of stainless steel. Of these, austenitic is the most widely used type. It has a nickel content of at least 7%, which makes it very flexible. It is used in a range of houseware products, industrial piping and vessels... there are other kinds as well, depending on the percentage of metals used...
This is similar to the one we have on the kitchen sink... should be a similar product available in the U.K.
