Homeschooling

Anyone out there homeschool? I would love to hear any experiences either for or against, and especially how your education department/school reacted to your decision to homeschool

There is a girl in my college class who was home scholed, and while she is very nice, I have to say she doesnt really have any social skills. She gets embarassed easily and doesnt know how to interact well with everyone else.

I also know of a woman who was homeschooled and she doesn't have any social problems..I guess it depends on personality & the way homeschooling was handled!

I would like to hear from any parents out there who are homeschooling now..I wait with bated breath :o)

I think mimififi home schools her kids and she always sounds like she is up to really interesting things.

I think it can be very good thing. I have known some well adjusted and well educated homeschooled children. I wish I had home schooled my child, at least for his earlier schooling.

Hi Pippa68: Yes I do Home educate my 3 school aged children and plan to continue to do so with the next 2. My eldest is in year 7 so we have just started the scary task of secondary school home ed, YIKES!

I love all aspects of home ed. I love the freedoms and the commitments and the spending time with my children. I have learned so much myself also and have lamented at how little I was taught at school as child myself.

I have had mixed responses from fam and friends, and have to ignore many comments, but at the end of the day, you do what's best for your family and when people see how bright and well adjusted and calm you kids are, they will soon back your decision just as my critics have.

i took my daughter out of school at 12 i had no problem with the authoritys you must be firm with them later when she took her exams i worked along with the college they were most helpfull and they gave me a personal tutor to help her she past her exams with good results ive never looked back but its not for all children you have to keep up there friendships outside the home very important and make sure you go swimming and to the gym and on trips of interest by the way you must sacrifice a lot of your time and be in a routine. you must have a good reason for doing it as they do need other children. mine was through illness.

I am researching it all right now and at the moment undecided. I have found your answers very helpful :o)

I realise it's a big undertaking ~ my daughter has had a pretty awful first year (reception) in school and I am not sure the environment is good for her..I have 3 other children who took very well to school, so this is a new experience for me! my daughter much prefers doing 'educational' stuff with me and even though she has no trouble actually going into school, she has difficulties coping with the crowds and staying focused.

She starts year one in September and I am filled with dread :o(

How are you getting on? Did you decide to homeschool in the end?

I homeschool my kids - 5 and 3 (impossible to separate them ;)
They can both read and write, and just love to do anything under the heading of 'school time'. My 3 yr old complains all weekend for the lack of it!

So many people tell me how fast time flies, and how I should make the most of it, but then they're negative at the idea of homeschooling. Crazy. For me, this is making the most of it. Sometimes I'm tired and grouchy, and impatient with their lack of concentration.....but that's the great thing about homeschooling - you can just close the book and head outside. Figure out how blackberries grow and why corks float and stones don't. On the good days we have a blast together. On the bad days, I tell them I'm sorry and pretend to scrunch all my grumpiness up in a ball and throw it out the window. Then we have a good laugh and start over the next day. I can't imagine life with the school run...too stressful!
