In my youth the Birch was used if I remember in the Isle of MAN,sadly in my opinion Its no longer used in the early 60s or earlier It was deemed to be BARBARIC,now I don't say bring back hanging but I think some sort of punishment like the Birch for knife crime and cruelty to animals and children, surely we can't go on as we are without doing something

that is why they go to prison generally, not sure i want to bring back the birch to be honest. I would like to see sentences fit the crime, and that life in prison for paedophiles like the recent cases of Barry Bennell.
I don't believe that physical cruelty as a punishment for physical cruelty has any place in a civilised society.

A nice quote Andy but do we have a civilized society?child abuse, animals and children illtreated,I don't think it's a civilized society
i think the majority of citizens are law abiding, there seems to be a persistent few who commit crimes, and those should be weeded out, and where appropriate sent to prison.

Thanks for butting in goodgoalie, very bad manners
Question Author
Emmie I think more much more than persistent few
Emmie - these so scum are too good for prison and many of them when at court - come out with a slap of the wrist.

There is no more room at the jails.
why stop at the Birch, I say
the Viets used to torment the Americans and dissident viets and anyuone they didnt like
bamboo splints under the nails - -
blimey those GIs used to whoop !
so violence to deal with violence.....like that ever works!
The threat of the birch did not deter crime and many repeat offenders were repeatedly birched.

It is inhumane to ask an adult to flog a juvenile or adult in cold blood - I would wonder at the mentality of a person applying for the job. Of course police officers used to birch offenders but I wouldn't want them doing that today.
Whilst on the beat I met a man who had actually received punishment in the form of being whipped by the cat-o-nine tails.I asked him what he felt about it.His reply was that every time he thought about committing a crime he felt pain in his back.He never re-offended, so in his case physical punishment did work.
woofgang; //so violence to deal with violence.....like that ever works!//

The sad truth is that violence can only be stopped by superior violence - two world wars, ISIS etc.
The passivity of Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, nice in theory, but didn't work.
khandro
with Gandhi it did work, after a fashion, non violent protest, then of course his life was ended by an act of violence.
I think it works - but purposefully inflicting physical pain on anyone or anything is a horrible thought.
emmie & naomi; I reluctantly have to concur with the sentiments expressed here;

Maybe we can look forward to this type of treatment being doled out when Sharia Law takes over in the UK?

well prison doesn't work for 90%
in my opinon the threat of prion is no deterrent to some but the threat of a good birching would be !
child abuse, animal abuse etc etc etc - all went on when the birch was about and when hanging was used - did it make any difference no!!
