You have until 15 January to use it.
I wonder if a strongly worded complaint might get you some money back.
Use any outstanding credit before 15th January, when the service will stop working. Get friends/family and/or ET to phone home.

Does anyone know the number of the speaking clock?

I don't think PAYG will get an automatic refund.

From their site:

What will happen to any credit I haven’t spent by 15th January 2016?

We would ask that you try to use all your credit before 15th January as it will no longer be possible to use this credit after that date. In the event there is outstanding credit you are unable to use please call our support centre team on 0333 313 1150 for help and assistance.

Hopefully by phoning that number you will be able to claim re-imbursement.
