Indeed, it is also gratifying that they do some checks before they payout larger sums. Only some pretty rudimentary checks are required to expose this kind of fraud.

This couple are 78 and 80. Doubtful they have a smartphone or are internet savvy.

Many 80 year olds cannot read a newspaper because of deteriorating eyesight.
Sign the ticket before getting it checked.
this was an elderly couple, so they may not have computer access.
Agree though always check your numbers, i wouldn't walk away from the shop the way the old lady did.

the elderly couple had been away on holiday and went to check the ticket on their return. who are you to judge what they do with their ticket? the shop owner should have been honest and got what he deserved. sometimes i wonder what you deserve....
30 months? out in 15! - five years would be more appropriate.
well....he's at least been sent to prison. i don't agree with the length of his sentence, tho. it should be longer, but then shouldn't they all be longer?
They should just make the machines play a loud noise if the ticket is a winner so the shopkeeper can't pretend its a loser.
That is a good idea bushbaby_de, at least everyone would know it was a winner.
