How are we supposed to know which is the right religion/god to follow? I mean who's to say the mormon's or the jehovah's have got it wrong?

I think the golden rule applies to your quest. just dont do to others that which you would not like being done to you
I agree. Do what your conscience tells you to do, and treat others as you would like to be treated. What more can we ask?
There is  tribe in Africa that believes that a giant pommegranat exploded and the seeds populated the world. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Don't follow a relgion.

Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism are all choices.

Lets face it only one of them can be right the others MUST be wrong.

Leave them all well alone.  You will only know the true answer when you die.

But then according to those religions won't it be too late by the time you die because not believing would mean you end up in hell?

How do we know anything? I suppose one day you'll get this gut feeling that something is right for you, and therefore in the case of religion this woud mean it's the right one, because i think nearlly all religions state that they are right and you cannot believe in any other.

does it matter?

christianity !  read  the good news bible. the lord says bewear of wolves in sheeps clothing! their is alot of bad out their. it is not the word of god. pray to him. he will help you!

I think the best thing you can do is reject ay religion and just be yourself. Think about it for one second, NONE OF THEM MAKE ANY SENCE! A christian would say how their religion is the right one whilst everyone else's is wrong, but wouldn't a muslim, jew and any other religion say the same? Sounds rather hypercritical if you ask me. Why does there have to be a God, or Gods, even? The world doesn't HAVE to make sence. Maybe we are just here BECAUSE WE ARE. Religion was made by man to answer unanswerable questions, no big.

I think there was a challenge put to Rene Descartes along the lines of "Why don't you become a Christian because if you're right and God doesn't exist you'll never know but if I'm right and he does you'll go to hell"

His response was basically "If you're right and God exists there are so many religions that you're likely to go to hell for following the wrong one but if I live a good life I may go to heaven for having done so and for following my concience and not having worshipped a false religion"

jake I don't think it can have been Descartes as he was only certain of two thing: God exist and "I think, therefore I am"

You may be right that it wasn't Decartes I can't quite remember.

The original contention basically that you should believe in god because there is no gain in not doing so is known as Pascales Wager

no one is saying the mormons or jehovahs have got it wrong ..they are quite happy to believe in whatever they wish as long as they dont keep forcing it on others by banging on doors..everyone should be free to choose for them selves ..i dont believe in any christian god yet my husband does and he never trys to brainwash me..all i believe in is mother earth and father sky..the thing is you must look into religion carefully and make your own mind up..is it for you or not.?unfortunately some poor souls have no choice as they are born into familys that expect them to follow what they believe in.and they just go along with it or risk loosing their familys that is the difficult choice....
so now we're believing in god for statistical reasons? now that would be a religion with the right ideas

LOL magicdice

That and pommegranates! I think I'll just stick to good old atheism though :0)

What is the point in believing anyway, I mean it doesn't say in the Bible you will go to heaven, Just the old Ashes to ashes bit.
Who says any of them are right? There are very few ideas surviving from such times that actually make sense, it's more a form of social conditioning these days.
Descartes also believed that animals having no souls, vide the christian religion, therefore can feel no pain, and he and his friends were amazed how they, the animals , could counterfeit pain upon being tortured. This from a respected {not by me} Philosopher.
A philosopher and not a scientist aware of the similarity in nervous systems. . .

Pascales wager doesn't work because an omnipotent god would know what you were thinking anyway
