I rent my apartment through an estate agent. On Saturday afternoon i went to close my bedroom window & the handle snapped off in my hand. Luckily the window is 'almost' closed but as i live near 2 busy roads & a busy pub i'm finding it hard to sleep. I went into my agents shop 9am on Monday morning & showed them the handle & did explain my problem with the noise. I also reminded them that when i first moved in the handle was loose & they sent a guy out who 'Bodged' it up. They said they would have to contact the owner to give approvel.I've heard nothing back from them yet. How long should i wait? Also is it a fire risk not being able to open it? Thanks

I would wait until the end of the week, to give the LL a chance to get back to you.

If you have not heard, I would write the agent a letter detailing the problem and that it is a fire risk, i.e. Health and Safety etc

Ok thanks muchlovex.
If you went in on Monday and haven't heard yet I think its OK to send an email or drop a note in to ask for a date for the repair to be carried out. I say email or note as gets your problem reported in writing and can be dated.

I wouldn't mention fire risk as there is no fire risk unless its your means of escape, but do mention the problem with noise and security.

Thanks maidup i will send an email. It is my only means of escape if a fire broke out in the corridoor.
It will depend on what sort of window and handle this is as to how long it may take to repair. If it's a double glazed window it may take a while to get a matching replacement. Depending on the cost, the LL may need someone to look at it to say whether it was broken accidentally or not. No harm in chasing it up though.
