It's baking powder that some people put into the scones that make your teeth go on edge, sometimes when they put too much in.

cheese scones are nice as well ,if you prefer something savoury. I always add a pinch of mustard powder.

Yes, that's it - and when you run your tongue across your teeth, aagh !
I thought it was tartar they put in that causes it. Baking powder afaik contains bicarb and I don't have any probs with that, I use it when I get heartburn.

Preferrably with no baking powder at all and preferably cheese scones.

They sell the most amazing huge cheese scones at the restaurant at our local Garden Centre. I go at least once a week. All home made and warm, and cheesy and yummy and I could eat one right now.
