Why aren't the Saudi people demanding democracy in their country? I'm sure politicians in The West would do all they could to help

thanks Bobbi, I had done the formal research work for a chapter or two of a book underway, so I knew where to go and retrieve the info.....I have never lived out there but have travelled all over )many times over) - the only two that I haven't been to in that ME domain or N-Africa are Iran and Algeria.
Saudi's are happy with their share of oil shareout
DT, I am glad you put up that info, otherwise I would have done similar - alcohol has become banned due to Hadith (words of the Prophet) - Mohammed is said to have referred to the verses you mention. From that, the surahs have been interpreted to say that if a lot of alcohol is bad, a little is better, and none at all is even better. Many Muslims will not take medication which has an alcohol base, which can lead to noncompliance with medication. Others will (it can be a very personal decision) on the principle that if it makes you better, it would be foolish not to take it.
i know lots of "Muslims" personally and i go for a drink with all of them ,and there practising Muslims,
there was one time I was in Paris, in a restaurant just behind the George le Cinq, and my Kuwaiti customers were knocking back Le Scotch like it was tomorrow. And I was on the Perrier (carbonated benzene), having picked up some liver thing in Somalia at the airport, and having to lay off the ethanol for three months. "What, DT, you are being a good Saudi?" was their comment.
I am not sure what others said (did not read all of the posts). But one of the very good reasons why west would not help any efforts towards democracy in SA is that then they may not be able to control them like they have done to KING and CO. Other reason is that then people like Osama Bin Laden may become head of the state. And of course west only like democracy when it suits them. For other example you may look at the example of Hamas in Palestine.
