On the news this morning it was reported that some scientists in Texas have linked a poor diet eaten by pregnant women with a low IQ in their offspring.

I'm not so sure - as poor diets are generally eaten by the less bright in society, surely it follows that their offspring will be less than bright anyway regardless of diet.

You only have to look at our chav underclass surviving on a diet of KFC, Greggs, McShite et al - they all tend to be 'challenged' as do their (many) children.

So, is intelligence or lack thereof inherited or is it due to a poor diet?

Well we can't take a horde of chavs and force feed them vegetables and organic meat when they are preggers so we will never know if it could be different......
Where do you get that this chav underclass survives on KFC, Greggs and McShite et al?

I went into KFC a few weeks back and I think it cost about £12...two meals for the lads and all I had was a wrap and a corn on the cob. So how could these chavs afford that?

Disgusting place anyway...never again.
IQ is a difficult one. It improves with practice and stimulation so it could be environment as much as nutrtition.

I'm generalising - but in my local KFC there always seems to be loads of them.
Ouch!
The daft rich women who diet in pregnancy....
Katie Price - well rich, but unable to prevent birth defects in first born....
The hidden relatives at the edges of our own royal family....

Food is calories. If the only calories offered are from fast food, said child will still survive. A child that is deprived of stimulus will turn away from learning.
Deprivation of the key elements of nutrition will have multiple effects in later life.
Experience and common sense shows that attainment in life is linked to both social and physical elements, but it is typical of the USA's commercially-driven social policy that an easy target will be seized on - it's very easy to spot and vilify the fat, poor and thick and blame them for their own misfortune.

If the analysis was that easy then the problem wouldn't exist.
Yes, on an episode of Child of Our Time, they followed one girl into adulthood and parenthood. Both her and her partner and learning difficulties...or so she thought. They IQ tested them both. He did have a low IQ but she scored pretty highly. Which goes to show that it was the environment she was brought up in.

People from a certain type of background probably encourage there children more..

There are plenty of people from various walks of life that can't cook. So does it make a difference if you're eating a very badly cooked homemade meal...or a bog standard takeaway? If my sister was left doing the cooking I would opt for the takeaway everytime.
Lets remember that the news was NOT about what is fed to children but what pregnant mums eat
In that case, see if you can catch any of the episodes of a programme called 'P1ssed and pregnant' - I don't know what channel it was but the women seemed to be from London and Dublin. Truly terrifying to see articulate intelligent women explaining how off their faces they were at conception and in early pregnancy - or the chav expectant mum who does a bottle of vodka with a friend 'because I'm not just an incubator'.....Be interesting to track short and long-term effects on the child and it would inform this debate.
Assuming it was a real study and not just some advertising nonsense, you are going to dismiss the rigorous mathematical analysis of the statistics in the study simply because the headline version of the results that they choose to use in the news doesn't fit in with what you reckon must be true?
Sunday Tmes this week (no point in putting a link to their website, it's a pay-site now) quoted a report by two UK govt agencies into childhood obesity and mentioned that kids are being weaned too early and appealed to people to stop pureeing chips and chinese takeaways to fed infants...
Wee da did.
