Just when there is good news about a British couple, who have been released by African pirates, we now hear of this tragic affair that befell a young British couple on their honeymoon in South Africa.

It is reported that South Africa has one of the worst crime rates in the world, why is this, or is it just Africa and it's people as a whole?

Why do you think that the groom was released, yet his Bride was shot?

They're only number 2 in the murder rate and actually the only African country in the top 10

In fact the most remarkable thing about this list is how few African countries feature in it.

Sorry to dissapoint your theory AOG
"were stopped in their taxi at 11pm by two men in one of Cape Town’s impoverished townships."

There are no go areas in all cities. Very sad though but some places you just shouldn't visit with some backup.
Do you think her husbands family paid a dowry and her murdered her???
I have a sister who travels a lot for work, including to SA. Whenever they have been there they are constantly escorted by a security guard who is armed. They are not allowed to leave the office building without him. Scary.
I like the idea that the people of a whole continent are like those one part of South Africa, or the whole of it ! Why would you suggest it as reasonable proposition? Careful, AOG, your slip's showing ! Do you suggest all the black people in Africa are like it or do you mean the whites and the blacks, Egyptians, and all the rest, Moslems included?
You'll find that when there's wealth and comparative poverty close together there will be robberies,' muggings' and burglaries. That's why Americans often live in gated communities. The Victorians had the same problem. So did people in the C18. There must have been some reason for their carrying small firearms and hanging pickpockets, burglars and robbers, which was presumably meant to be a deterrent..

I did say ONE of the worst crime rates in the world, but why try and take some of the honour away from them, doesn't coming second warrant an award?

Neither did I say what kind of crimes, but why bother with the truth when one is once again defending killers.

Instead of trying to gain 'Brownie points' against me, perhaps you would be better deployed condemning this unwarranted savage crime.

Oh! so you are admitting that there are 'no-go areas' in all cities, must remember to book two taxis (one to ride shotgun) the next time I am out after 11pm.
^ Rude and sarcastic^
I didn't deny that it was the case, the fact that they were number 2 was an observation in passing.

The point was that you attempted to imply this was symptomatic for Africa as a whole - attempting to go from the specific to the (flawed) general case has been a favorite technique of the rabble rouser throughout history.

Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini all would recognise and applaud your technique

I think the majority would think it is perfectly right to assume that a very large proportion of Africa is a pretty scary place, where life is treated with little importance.

Not seen many trucks full of armed hooligans driving along the roads in America, Britain or even in that another impoverish continent (sub), India.

Also notice you missed out 'murders' in your list of crimes.

Have a job, they are all dead.
The murderers were black men so we get the savages label again.

// ...is it just Africa and it's people as a whole? //

No, South Africa is just one of 57 countries on the continent. Many have less crime than Britain.

And you are doing you usual trick of condemning a whole population for the actions of a few. The City of Cape Town is just 0.3% of Africa's population (and the ghettos considerably less than that), yet the other 1,000 million+ Africans get tarred with the same brush.
in answer to your question, prehaps she was shot because she was raped and they released him so as not to have to deal with him
Yet another obviously racist thread by an obviously racist member to incite a racist argument ... again overlooked by (possibly a racist?) Editor?
Hold on NazNomad. There is nothing to indicate the Editor is racist.

If you think the thread is racist, and by not banning it, that makes the Editor racist, then you are wrong. I have the power to remove this question, but I believe it is better to leave it and let other make up their minds about the motives and attitude of the person posting it.
I said ''possibly'' because this poster is continually allowed to spew their racist bile on the forum without censure by the 'higher powers'.
If it was the occasional thread, it might almost be acceptable ...buy daily and continually posting this crap isn't.

Africa and it's people as a whole?

That's the equivalent of going to see Gomorrah (the 2008 film), and coming away asking, "Is that an example of crime in Europe as a whole".

It really is an astonishingly silly question. You need to understand the difference between a country and a continent. I know Sarah Palin didn't know, but really, you should.
it's worse than that, sp1814 - this crime occurred in one township. So it's like saying 'Someone had their pocket picked in Lower Snottlebury last week, are all Europeans thieves?'
That does it, I'm never going to Lower Snottlebury. :-))
