Can anyone explain to me why we still need to spend huge amounts of money on nuclear missiles?

Because there are bad guys out there with a bigger nuclear capability?
To deter unstable regimes that already (or soon will) have nuclear capability.
Question Author
Do you really think it is any deterrent?

They know full well we would never use them.
If nuclear weapons dont save the world it will nice to know if someone starts lobbing them at us we will have time to wipe them all out just after.
We don't. (IMO)

I can think of far better things to spend the money on.

Also if you have people wanting to aquire nuclear weapons, why should they take any notice of us saying they shouldn't when we are buying more?
LOL...the old 'mutually assured destruction' thing all over again.
Yes, great idea - let's all arm ourself to the teeth with weapons that could destroy all known life on earth, so long as we can get our revenge in it will all have been worth it.

Sorry about my spelling, it should read 'acquire'
Yes we could scrap trident and spend it on workshy scum! Brill!
There's two different questions

Do we need a nuclear capability?

Do we need Trident?

People seem to be blindly thinking these are the same.

I would answer -

1/ perhaps but probably not
2/ definately not

Exactly who is deterred by trident but not by a nuclear cruise missile?

Any nuclear attack on this country is more likely to come in on ca container through Southampton Docks than on the tip of an ICMB

So if the PM is woken tomorrow to be told that Manchester has gone up in smoke exactly who is he going to nuke?

Iran?
Syria?
Lybia?
Cuba?
Israel?
Bhutan?
See if someone can spot the pr!ck in this thread (clue: it isn't me)
another clue: it smells of motorcyle exhaust and chip-fat.
UK is in an international pissing competition. France has the bomb.
Probably have to bomb the swann hunter shipyard 'cos they built the container ship and launched it.
We probably spend more on officers mess bills, but no I can't explain how trident can do anything that an air launched cruise missile or stealth bomber can't do.
Since this nuclear game is just one big game of bluff, why don't we stop spending any more money on it, but make out we are still up-to-date?
How do you know that's not what is being done?
Hooray ! AOG posts something I actually agree with.
If I told you that Chuck, I would have to shoot you, and we can't have that, you are far too valuable for your technology expertise. :0)
Stick around prancer you may get into the habit, you know I make sense.
