Why are they tinkering at the edges with this plain packaging h0rsh1t? Make them £100 a pack! and add £10 each budget, sorted! Most kids can't afford that we extract a load more tax from the addicts. Ok it'll increase bootlegging but so what most smokers still have to buy full price ones at some point! The wisdom of the Geezer is strong today!

no we are talking about smoking at the moment why must we leak into other issues, they are separate subjects, raise your own thread if you like. The governement has a stated aim of reducing this disgusting anti social habit that's what I'm talking about, can you not get your thick heads around that? Yes bootlegging will increase but believe me rasing the cost will work, does anyone know a smoker who can get bootlegg 100% of the time? May I reiterate that smoking is not a net contributor to taxes, it is estimated that direct and indirect costs add up to 20 billion, they put in 6billion now with my price increase taking into account a 50% reduction in sales to be pessimistic, assuming £4 per pack is tax, then the tax take would become £75 billion now we could use that!

Oh almost forgot, BGB for everhelpful and a special mention for insults just because I commit the sin of not agreeing, nice one, there, you should be able to pawn it for a packet of death tubes eh, what a titfer tat!
Ya know what scares me about anti-smokers? Their over zealousness. They are always super passionate about their 'cause' and quite frankly come across as rabid loons.

No offence.
does anyone know a smoker who can get bootlegg 100% of the time?

i know a few
putting the price of fags up is causing a bigger problem. the low paid person who wants a fag will buy the lowest priced ones that he/she can get.there are a lot of snide ones being sold.
if you compare a normal drink with moonsine then a snide cig with a normal one you will understand.
the moonshine may make you blind
the snide cig will give you bad chest. sooner rather than later

In defence of smokers being a drain on the NHS, at least they die younger saving the costs of careing for them in Old folks homes when they develop senility, so are they really a drain? 3-6 months care with lung cancer v's 8 year average care for senile dementia.

...and I am a non smoker.
boo i know people who have never bought a pack of green or cigs at a shop etc for well over 15 years.
I'm not the one saying otherwise Dr F?

I too buy cigs from a errr lets say supplier shall we? Though as R1 pointed out, I do ocassionaly buy the legit stuff too.
change you ice cream man.......... lol

redhelen, did you not read my last post, the government does not make money from smoking that's a myth.
Where I live, smoking is banned in All public buildings, pubs, clubs, and anywhere people gather, smoking areas are provided (outdoors) Even then, non-smokers can't resist a snide remark as they pass by. What is their problem?

but.....but.....but, I'll get addicted to prescription drugs - free to me but costly to NHS.

" non-smokers can't resist a snide remark as they pass by. What is their problem? "

its only the same as when people feel he need to make snide comments if they see a fat person eating in a mcdonalds or an old person "dressing young" or an older man with a younger woman and vice versa. society as a whole is judgemental.
£100 per pack. All this will do is price out people on the lowest incomes. Will not discourage anyone who can afford it. Think about supercars, 6 mpg. £3000 service every 6 months. I couldn't afford to run one if I won it in a raffle.
