Could this be the start to another series of terrorist attacks by some wing of the IRA?

Or is this just an isolated incident?

There have been a few bombs found in time and a few hoax bombs (suspicious packages) about recently over here. They are apparantly sending experts over to investigate dissident republicans. It had been reported on the news that Northern Ireland was under its greatest threat ever for an attack, it was only a matter of time before they did something I think.
The vast majority of people in the North STILL want peace in my opinion ( I am originally from Belfast myself), however whenever an organisation as big and socially extensive as the IRA breaks down somewhat, you will create a power vacuum, and in this case it's been filled by people with strong and extreme nationalist tendancies who were disaffected for whatever reason by the peace process. You will always get this scenario wherever you are under similar circumstances.
However the majority of the people are sensible, they remember the bad old days, and would not have offered these rengade individuals much support in the big scheme of things.
Enter some f3ckwit who thinks it's a good idea to, very publicly, invite a sepcialist squad from the British army over to 'investigate' what's going on.
Now these renegades have a load of propaganda to bandy about at young lads who are waltizing about on street corners and have heard good and glorious tales of the troubles and 'fighting for the cause' and lead them right into a huge abyss of violence and destruction.
I despair of where some people's intelligence lies in dealing with what would have been quite a simple situaiton, insetad they are inflaming the populace, upping the ante and now this terrible spark of two soldiers being killed and the reprisals that will draw will likely ignite the whole 'province'.
AOG , it seems as usual you are only semi-informed at best . There have been around 15 incidents in the last year & a half. Also, you are the only person I've heard refer to these people as 'some wing of the IRA' .
Even Paisley junior hasn't stooped to such inaccuracies, but then again I doubt if his purpose in life is to try to start arguments on an internet site.
Listen, guys, stop shilly shallying - this was nothing less than cold blooded murder!
The mindless, cowardly lunatics who perpetrated this, no matter which "cause" they purport to "represent", are scum who have crawled out from their sewers to wreak havoc on decent society by a pathetic and fruitless display of butchery!
The only thing their depravity deserves is our condemnation and, if caught, to be nailed to the gates of the barracks at the scene of their atrocity in order that the colleagues of the slain be allowed to mete out suitable "punishment" to those barstewards!!!!!!!
Despite who these scum claim to be or represent, they are not IRA and even Sinn Fein has condemned this atrocity. Always some lowlife willing to crawl out from under a rock.
Also, it's not isolated and I fear it'll get worse before it gets better.
I agree Whickerman, there will now be revenge attacks I think. My boyfriend is currently in Iraq and I now think he's safer there than what he would be here... its sad.
I belive the violence will return. This is because I was in Londonderry, or Derry, whichever you prefer, and you could cut the tensions with a knife,

I was there as a soldier in 1973, and had a look at some of places we patrolled, in one place, there's a concrete pillar, a bit like a cenotaph, with the names of all the Catholics that were murdered by the British Army, that word Murdered is actually on it, and I really believe, that while there are things like that in the open, there will never really be a lasting peace.

While there, I was also asked by an Irish relation to be careful what I said.
The Real IRA has claimed to be behind the murders so they are (or were at least) "some wing" of Sinn Fein/IRA. We can but hope that a witness is brave enough to come forward.
Adams an co know who they are, if they are sincere in their condemnation they should either hand them over of put their own house in order, I don't mind which.
I'm sure Gerry Adams would love to be given free reign to sort them out, trouble is I seem to reclal that being something that a while ago no-one in England approved of as it proved what 'animals' the IRA were and how ' above the law' they think they are. The REAL IRA ( who are NOTHING of the sort) are NO friends of Gerry Adams.... and the security services already know who they are anyway.

Could someone please explain to me, in simple terms, what anyone has to gain from this?

Why would anyone want a return to the bombs of the 70s???

It makes no sense to me. What are the political goals of the Real IRA???
simple

The Real IRA pursues a dream, abandoned by the mainstream of the IRA, of forcing Northern Ireland out of the United Kingdom and into the Republic of Ireland.

I do not know why you were so aggressive towards me for posting what I thought was quite a legitimate question regarding a item of news.

I do not profess to be an expert on Northern Ireland's problems. You say there have been 15 incidents in the last year and half? All right then so what, how many of them have involved the killing of British troops? I thought so none.

It also seemed to touch a raw nerve when I referred to these cowards as 'some wing of the IRA' . Since no one knew at that time who was responsible, I thought it only safe to refer to them in that way. We have later found out that the 'Real IRA' have admitted to carrying out this murderous act .

Regarding trying to start arguments on an internet site. I think that you have shown not only to me but also to others, that you are indeed the past master at this. So I have no intention of taking this rather repugnant title from you.

Here, lets not argue over this. Not everyone knows lots about what goes on over here (and no one claimed to). Its how people learn when more informed people explain to them/discuss.
AOG, You've been vindicated, given that the so-called "Real IRA" scumbags have claimed responsibility for this horrendous atrocity.

Wonder if BillySugger will apologise to you? After all, had it not been some sewer rats aligned to the IRA who perpetrated such an act, just who does BS believe WOULD have been capable of such a sub-human act? The Antrim branch of either Al Qaeda or the Taliban?
I can claim to be the Real Conservative Party or the Real David Bowie, don't make it so...
Quite. Most Republicans would not wish be allied with such a futile and self serving movement.
No intention of apologising as I do have knowledge of Irish history & Paraffin you seem to be just as ignorant - 'aligned to the IRA'? Where did you get that one from?
As Whickerman says anyone can call themselves whatever they want .
As for your last paragraph AOG I'm not the one posting Daily/Sunday Mail 'scare' headlines to get a reaction .
