Just read a couple of interesting articles in The Economist about the short (and maybe long) term future of immigration to the UK - though both of these focus on EU immigration.

As it's kind of a hot topic on AB, I thought it might be a bit more interesting to see what people think the future holds for the issue.

The main article is here and focuses on a recent decline in East European migration.

The next one (that it refers to) is here and is a look at Eurostat's recent population estimates, which predict the UK as the largest of the current EU members in 2060.

What do you think is the future of immigration in the UK?

The problem we have in this country in that we have an ever growing ageing population. Peple are living longer and the current "white" English population are not having enough children.

For the first time ever there are more people over 60 than under 18.

In the past the huge working population help to pay for the relatively small older population. Now we have a huge older population and not enough young working people to pay for it.

To get round this problem various governments (Tories and Labour) have had an almost open door policy on immigration.

Whilst I agree you need some immigration, ours has been unmanaged and uncontrolled.

We now have hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants and hundreds of thousands of people who say they are asylum seekers but are not.

We also have a huge population of immigrants who cannot and will not speak English and have little or no qualifications.

Some cities have been "taken over" by immigrants and the whites are fleeing, leaving them to it.

Some immigrants are turning to crime, drug dealing and credit card crme to earn a living, and most of the knife crime is amongst the immigrant population.

To be honest I fear for the country and if the economic situations worsens I can see some civil strife.

I used to love living here in the UK but now hate living here and have no desire to live in a country full of blacks, asians and muslims.

The future for the UK is bleak.
To see what I mean by civil strife, see an article from a few days ago where a bulding was burned down after permission had been given to turn it into a mosque

And while searching for that article I found this one, giving an idea of the type of scum we have now got in this country (and we canot even get rid of him!)

There is already civil strife in Italy where gypsy camps have been attacked and burned to the ground.

And we have had problems nearer at home, with Roma gypsies camping in homes on a roundabout in Ireland (article from 2007)

If this type of unmanaged immigration continues I can see much more of this type of civil strife and gangs taking the law into their own hands to protect their way of life.

I am afraid the politicians live in the fantasy world and dont realise the effect this mass movement of people has on the local population of any country.
The phrase 'leaving a sinking ship springs to mind'.

The Poles may leave but the Romanians & Bulgarians will be able to work freely in the UK in the year 2013. Then we should see the influx of Turkish immigrants.

There is a greater rise in births among the immigrants than the indigenous population. We are only a tiny island and our infrastructure ( which is already at breaking point) cannot take much more.
Is it discrimitory to welcome the immigrants from Europe but throw out those that have different cultures to our own and travel half way round the globe to corrupt our society?
