and this was in the days before crossing the street was dangerous
Don't know if anyone's noticed, but this was 50 years ago. Having said that, since we've been made aware of the dangers of smoking, no government, Conservative or Labour, has banned it - and why? Because none of them have been willing to lose the revenue.
Question Author
No Naomi, because banning Smoking would give the gangs more profits.

Try watching the BBC News,mate.
so the lefties are getting so desperate they are going back 50 years to find Tory ideas to have a go at. Perlease. Tell you what:here you go :

- is smoking bad? Yes, is it harmful? yes, should we tax it to death? yes

let's stop pussy footing around with the sados, 50 a packet, they won't give up because they can't. They don't mind being butt fcuked on prime time because they'd sell their soul for 500 carcinogens.

If the Tory's hid it they didn't need to, look at today with all the warnings, come on please!

And don't try and give me all that "where are we going to get the money if they all give up pony" they won't they can't and even if they could they cost more than they put in by a huge factor, get real!
i smoke. i choose to smoke.
personaly as long as the tax put on cigys goes towards the health service i dont see a problem. fact is that it doesnt under labour or tory government.
i put up with being forced to go outside with no fking shelter thanks to the ******** eu lore.

So you would be okay with 8p on your income tax?

fatties cost the NHS just as much as smokers
Question Author
Oh Gawd I forgot !!! It's all the fault of Europe innit.
I smoke and if it is so bad then why doesnt any govt ban it full stop?

If there was no duty on fags then everyones income tax would go up and then people would grizzle about paying too much tax.

kin income tax is another con, you could abolish the whole kin lot tomorrow, look at the figures direct taxation costs almost as much to collect as it brings in. It''s just a job creation scheme for the public sector. lefties love it because it prevents wealth creation, the last they they want. Income tax alone would not cover the NHS budget let alone the rest.
People moan about Nanny State governments telling them what to do, and yet here were are complaining that the current one isn't a) banning smoking or b) charging 50 for fags, just because it's harmful to the user.

Alcohol is harmful to the user. As are: crisps, fried breakfasts, pasties, rugby, boxing, sky-diving, rock climbing, motor racing, burgers, self-harm. All perfectly legal.

What happened to free will? Of course, tax cigarettes in a way that is commensurate with the burden smoking puts on the NHS, but not just because it's 'bad' for you.

And it takes 2 seconds to work out what would happen if fags cost 50 a pack. A black market would open up. You don't think we have enough trouble with gangs and drug-related crime?
At that price you could make a living criss crossing the channel and return with your allowance
I don't for one moment advocate banning smoking, and I don't object to anyone smoking if that's what they want to do - each to his own. The fact is that governments of all colours find the revenue that smokers generate to be a very lucrative income. They warn us of the dangers, but they never go so far as to put their money (or our money) where their mouth is and ban it altogether, so I don't think it's entirely fair to say 'Vote Tory and Die' - especially as the misdemeanor in question was committed 50 years ago. We may just as well bring the whole thing up to date and say 'Vote Labour and Die' since the current government is well aware of the dangers, but merely makes the right noises by putting health warnings on tobacco products. Like its predecessors, it won't ban it because the loss of revenue would be enormous. It's as simple as that.
