can this only be done to candidates who have attempted insurrection or can it simply be done to any presidential candidate? i did not know it was possible to do this before these cases and i do not understand the law... i do worry that republicans might use this to block candidates who are centre left or who are simply black

It's a slippery slope.

They are using the 14th amendment of the US Constitution, which basically says that anyone who has sworn allegiance to the Constitution [Which Trump did, on being sworn in as President], cannot hold office if they have been engaged in insurrection.

//Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, concluded that Trump, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, incited an insurrection //

She 'concluded'.  Since when was she appointed judge and jury?

He will become even more popular by adding martyrdom to his CV, and will undoubtedly be the next POTUS.

My regret may be that he will leave Ukraine out to dry, though leaving the UN = good,  leaving NATO (?).

I don’t think there can be much doubt that Trump incited insurrection – he wanted Mike Pence to overturn the election result (that he would announce in Congress); and in a famous telephone call asked the Georgia Secretary of State to find 11,780 votes in his favour (one more than he needed to win the State).

You couldn’t get much more corrupt than that.

Hymie, you're not judge and jury either.   Him today, who tomorrow?  This should worry the USA.

So instructing the person who is to announce the election result in Congress to falsely declare that you are the winner – and telling an election official to fraudulently find over 11,000 votes in your favour – are perfectly reasonable things for a losing President to do?

Has be been tried and found guilty?

If you read the wiki linked article, you can read what Trump said in that phone call -  or you can listen to it here (to the relevant part):-

I've read it before.  I'll ask again.  Has he been tried and found guilty?

The Constitution does say that the person has to be found guilty in a court of law; having a recording of being engaged in insurrection is good enough for me.

does not

Oh well, if it's good enough for you I guess that seals it, hymie.  Just be careful what you wish for.  It might be someone you like next time.

How can you defend the indefensible, naomi. He made unfounded, untrue allegations and tried to pressure them into finding thousands of extra votes

newmodarmy.  I think there have to be solid rules.  Unless someone has been convicted legitimately by those qualified to judge, of a crime, misdemeanour or indiscretion that legally bars them from standing for election, no one person, whatever their status, should be able to disqualify them by simply drawing their own 'conclusions'.  This is not democracy in action - quite the reverse - and that really is a very slippery slope.

"I don’t think"

and there ies the problem....

only reason theyre wanting him banned is theyre running schitt scared of him...

^Exactly.

I have relatives in the U.S., maybe you do too, and they tell me that Trump is extremely popular. He may yet get the nomination and subsequently, become the next POTUS.
