There was an interview with Mary Austin on local radio, yesterday, in which she explained that she is to sell quite a lot of the stuff she inherited on Freddie's death. Aside from some artwork, there are original lyrics and notes to a few of the songs penned by FM, his waistcoat with his 6 cats printed on the front, the guitar on which he 'composed' Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and many more items.
When asked why she was selling now, she replied that she believes it's time to get her affairs in order and all she is keeping are the personal gifts FM bought for her.
I attended a Queen fan club convention in the early 80's to write about it for a magazine.

An auctioned lot was one of Freddie's stage leotards (unwashed) which went for more than £800.

I spoke to the lady who had the winning bid and she told me that her delight was somewhat tempered by the fact that she would have to wait until she got home to tell her husband that they were selling the car!
Are you thinking of buying them? Pmsl.

if one was a freddy impersonator, wearing the erm wearing the leather hotpants might give extra impetus, i imagine at certain parties the wearer would be the bell of the ball!...cough.
£800 for Freddie Mercurys unwashed leotard?

Not to be sniffed at.
Silly, silly, self indulgent Pillock's.
david - // Silly, silly, self indulgent Pillock's. //

People derive pleasure in endless ways - some enjoy collecting memorabilia, and there is a massive lucrative market in it.

I'm not a fan myself, even though I have far more access to it than most people, but I have no issue with people enjoying owning things from famous people, if it gives them pleasure.

For me, anything that doesn't cause pain or damage is fine, if people want to indulge, no worries.
Apparently Steve McQueen’s underpants were sold. As was Rasputin’s penis, Napoleons penis, and famously Marilyn Monroe’s dress for ludicrous amounts. You may be alright with it Andy, I’m not. I find it obscene that the obsession to own, and goodness knows do what with deceased cast off’s unhealthy. And a complete waste of money that could be put to much better use. But that’s me.

usually they are investments david and thus make money.
If it is of known provenance these type of items usually do sell at a high premium.I think Jimi Hendrixs drummer sold Hendrixs guitar(worth about £30,000)for something like £200,000.There is certainly money to be made for this kind of stuff.
Back when hangings were public, the hangman would typically cut the roped used into inch-long pieces and sell them as souvenirs to the assembled masses. Of course, they would always have many more pieces available from other items not actually used in the hanging itself, hence "money for old rope". People love a souvenir.
It's like anything, it's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.

If you're a big Queen/Mercury fan and you're prepared to pay for this, who is anyone else to sneer at it? I find it absurd that people pay thousands for things like personalised number plates, but that's just me.
I think Hank Marvin owns Buddy Hollys original electric guitar. If it had been owned by Fred Bloggs next door it would be worth a couple of grand.Being owned by two musical legends,it must be worth millions now.
