Speaking to my nephew (21) and uni his mates, sexuality is sooo much less of a big deal than it is to older people (they charmingly refer to them as "boomers") and whist it's true that we've moved away from the world of the 80s (cf. George Michael to Olly Alexander) I don't think it's true to assume that everyone is a accepting progressive.
I think like mixed race marriages, it'll take time to gain acceptance.

They say young people need to 'see it to be it' The forerunners will be more visible so those that follow don't need to make an issue of it. But it's a lonely place where you can feel very vulnerable.
It wasn't so long ago that racism was the focus, it still exists but is more widely condemned, homophobia will be another challenge, unfortunately the groups most likely to understand the problems of being a persecuted minority are those most likely to have a cultural, or religious aversion to homosexuality. As it was pointed out to me when a victim of an anti lesbian attack ( pre Dave when I was in a long term same sex relationship) there is a hierarchy of isms and homophobia is a long way down the pecking order behind racism , religious persecution, sexism and the disabled rights campaign. The perpetrator was a black, South African, fundamentalist Christian.

Well you can't make jokes about black people being black any more, but it obvious that being gay is still fair game, to me there is a point where one person's humour is someone else's unkindness, even if it wasn't meant that way. I am not in any way woke, but I do believe in respect for others if they are not harming anyone with their lifestyle choices.
