I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

Bit early Lady J, 79 to go!
> It placates.

Yep, with the truth.
Did she find out where in Africa she’s from, then?
Not at all, ellipsis. It stops the manufactured rot from festering. That’s all.
> Not at all, ellipsis

Not at all? That would make the honourable, respectable and decent Lady Susan a liar. And not only that, she'd be lying to protect a liar.

No, it's the truth.
Naomi - Why do you see Lady Hussey's apology as 'placating'?

Who is she supposed to be 'placating' exactly.

I see it, as I said, as her having the additional grace to add a face-to-face apology to the one she issued immediately after the incident occurred.

Why does it need to be anything other than just that.
No, ellipsis, it would make her diplomatic. She said something - albeit in all innocence - that someone claims upset them and subsequently made a huge fuss about. The perceived offender apologised. That’s diplomacy.

The result is that the complainant is happy, all the people who have been making a meal of their outrage are happy, AH is happy, you’re happy, and the former lady in waiting is still on the king’s Christmas card list. Clever lady. Job done. Happy days.
I wonder who arranged that apology at the palace ?
> She said something - albeit in all innocence - that someone claims upset them and subsequently made a huge fuss about. The perceived offender apologised.

... and accepted that she had caused offence, and stepped aside from her role.

That was it. That's what this whole thread was about.
1000! you can do,it,guys! i believe in you
Ellipsis, we know.
Sky, to their shame, gave dreadful coverage of this meeting last night saying that lady Hussey apologised for her RACIST remarks.
She did no such thing, she didn't use the word at all, she simply said how she was sorry to have caused offence.
Aye, untitled, something like the old dear having an undiagnosed UTI causing her to temporarily become detatched from reality should do it.

It'll also give some an opportunity to display previously unknown areas of expertise, as per.

One of the finest retorts ever. Well done Sir!

// andy, Fulani is not as you spelled her name...//

A Freudian slip?

Zebu, //One of the finest retorts ever. //

As the late Queen said, recollections may vary.
Full marks to LIW. She has behaved with grace, understanding, tact and has shown she knows the difference between inadvertently using remarks that were not quite as polite as they were meant to be and brazen playing of the race card.

Very well done.
Zacs. You have to keep your eye on it or you'll miss your big moment.
// and brazen playing of the race card. //

Nevertheless, it was played with justification!

Do not be upset by this. For even AH was to deny this part in the unfortunate faux pas committed by the gracious LadySH.
LJ, "[Lady Hussey] has behaved with grace, understanding, tact".

It's a pity she didn't use those techniques in the first place.
