What is it about football that prompts this disgusting behaviour? I can't think of any other sport that has a similar effect.

Because they’re overpaid Divas now Naomi , compare them to the ‘gentleman ‘ of Rugby

But it's not the players who are rioting, bobbi. It's the moronic fans.

It's not the overpaid divas who are rioting, Bobs.
as someone put it, they are rioters not football fans. and should be treated accordingly, tear gas, water cannon and arrests of those rioting.
It would appear that Moroccans living in those cities went out on the streets to celebrate their country's victory over Belgium. Which was not to the liking of the Belgian and Dutch people of those regions. Race riots, possibly?
possibly Ken.
My apologies, I should of opened you link first ( I’ve just got up)
As for ‘fans’ ? They aren’t fans who do this ,genuine fans take the good with the bad
At least it’s not English ‘fans’.
The situation in Belgium will be alcohol related.
Probably does not apply to the Moroccan fans.

Only football fans drink?
Aldous Huxley has the answer.

Might not be booze, how about khat?
Aye Gromit, yer wild-eyed Africans don't need drink to get them going, innit.

'Probably'

India v Pakistan at cricket, perhaps?

I am not sure it was much of an upset to be honest.
Most of the Belgian team are plainly well past it.
I wouldn't say it is racially motivated - look at all the hooliganism and fighting between UK football team supporters.

That's rare though, Chris, and I'd say that was more about politics than cricket. Football fans do it frequently.
Football is a seriously tribal pursuit.

It arouses all the 'gang' mentality of the cerebrally challenged who need some of the basic affirmation they never received growing up, to assuage their deep-seated sense if isolation and insecurity.

The sense of a tribal camaraderie is supplied by joining fellow supporters in the chanting and mass back-slapping sense of 'belonging' that they get from football, add in being a small minority in a foreign country, and those feelings are heightened even further.

Also in play (!) is the primeval sense of fear and loathing of anyone who is 'different', and all that is required to set off that reaction is for fans of an opposing team to appear. Once again, add in the additional frisson of the other fans being 'foreign', and the hate/fear quotient increases once again.

And finally, take that mass of hormonal cod-masculinity with all its twisted ideas of 'honour' and 'brotherhood' and the desire for conflict and violence as a release of pent-up emotions they don't comprehend, and soak it in excess alcohol for several hours.

That eliminates any last vestiges of sensible mature adult behaviour that befits visitors to another country to enjoy a sporting event, and turns it into an excuse to inflict physical pain on complete strangers, and smash up the surroundings in ways they did as small boys invited round to play in a friend's garden, but never invited back.

Et voila - hooliganism.
//It arouses all the 'gang' mentality of the cerebrally challenged//

Not true, there are some very intelligent people behind some of these crews.
Question Author
AH, Hmmm... not so sure about that. For a start it begs the question why doesn't that same tribal mentality affect followers of other team sports in a similar way?
