All migrants whether legal or illegal will eventually have to be housed and later when they have imported their bride there will be family members coming and overstaying.
We are unable to build housing to meet the needs of British citizens and now have the constant flow of extra people to accommodate. Already there is talk of 'reviewing' the Green Belt. So much for England's Green & pleasant Land

I was going to say the coastguard 'rescued' a load of 'asylum seekers' yesterday after being called out to reports of a man clinging to a buoy.
Was going to suggest it was a false report to lure the coastguard out.
Couldn't find the story about all the 'asylum seekers' they picked up but I did find this, lol.

Lucky man.
was watching that on the news this morning, incredibly lucky man
//What solution to this issue would you suggest New judge?//

They need to be physically prevented from landing here. If lifeboats and coastguard cutters are to be used to "intercept" them those interceptions should involve taking them back to France, not landing them here. Those who do make it should be returned immediately - that is they should be taken immediately to the Port of Dover where a small vessel would operate 24/7 from there back to Calais. That will do for a start. The government needs to concentrate its efforts on preventing them landing, not on what to do with them when they arrive. Nobody living in France is under threat and we should have no obligation to assist them in any way.

// In fact they're asylum seekers,..//

Why do you say this, Paigntonian? They are not asylum seekers. They have arrived from France where they are safe and under no threat (and in fact have passed through numerous other similar countries in order to get there). They simply don't like it there and would prefer it here, that's all. The number you mention may seem small but why should a seaside hotel in South Devon be requisitioned to accommodate people who have no right to be here?
That sounds good newjudge if it works.. but what happens when France refuses to accept them and turns them back again to us. . or if France insist on doing checks at Dover before the ferry's set off and kick them off.
The first thing that has to be done is getting actual cooperation between the two most affected countries.
Without that nothing's going to change.
A tall order I admit but there must be one or two politicians or officials on each side who have a modern, post Agincourt view of things, surely.
Agree totally....but France is in a much stronger position and in no rush to stop them leaving so e may have to compromise and say will take so many on chartered ferry's and in return France will police there beaches to stop dingheys
naomi: Was just trying to explain how some people had vastly overreacted to a tiny number in a seaside resort. It's ludicrous to believe their presence will 'destroy' the resort and sad that idiotic racism mars local debate. I certainly didn't say I didn't want them here or wanted them here. What would you do with homeless people living in doorways? Round them up and dump them elsewhere?
5Cers like gromit love to point out the immigration problem but resist any measures to sort it. So oh wise one, how do you think it should be dealt with?
New Judge. You're wrong about the hotel being requisitioned. It's not wartime. The hotel in this case is now full, an extremely unlikely eventuality in an average October, the owners are making much more money than they normally would and, I understand, are only too happy with he arrangement.
NJ;//Those who do make it should be returned immediately - that is they should be taken immediately to the Port of Dover where a small vessel would operate 24/7 from there back to Calais. //

The problem with that plan is it would be effectively making the UK into people smugglers.
Once again I'll point out the obvious. If France agree that we can send them straight back then within a few weeks they wont bother trying to cross and then they won't bother to even go to France. Sorted for us both. Why won't the French play ball?
//Why won't the French play ball?//

Do you really need to ask? It's cos they're French innit!
Paigntonian. Your Indian friends are absolutely right. Objecting to foreign free-loaders coming here and being accommodated isn't racism. Those who arrive from Europe are not genuine asylum seekers - they're all economic migrants - and yes, if it were within my power to decide what to do with them, I would round them up - and send them packing without delay.
NJ; If we intercept a boat-load of would-be illegals and dump them back on French soil, are we not guilty of trafficking?
//Why won't the French play ball? //

Because they don't want them either. They're pleased to be rid of them.
davebro, yes I agree but surely they'd like to sort their own problem too. If they agreed then they'd not have tent cities of illegals doing gawd knows what. Do the prefer to annoy us rather than solving their own problem? Surely we can work together.
The French didn't put them in hotels - hence the "jungle" at Calais.
//NJ; If we intercept a boat-load of would-be illegals and dump them back on French soil, are we not guilty of trafficking? //

They've paid thousands for a one way ticket, Ken. The return journey we'd do for free. ;o)
getting cross-tracked with the other thread
naomi: "Because they don't want them either. They're pleased to be rid of them. " - yes but if they agree they'd not even be in France in the first place. If they want rid, the best, easiest most effective way is to agree to us sending them back. Suddenly the people traffickers will have no takers and within a few weeks they'd all be gone from the France entirely.
