Rubbish - unless you only drink from a sealed bottle you opened yourself and eat food which you brought with you and have supervised 24/7, you are at risk.
It may be a small risk (although higher for young women), but it's still there and worrying for parents.

Be glad he wasn't at the Reading Festival too...mass brawls and trashing, and who knows what else.

My hippy friends now in their 60s took their children to festivals for years from a very young age. The whole family still go yearly to Glastonbury. Considering how many people go there are very few problems. Personally I wouldn't go because of the awful loos. My son went regularly from 16 until he met his wife to be, who hated camping and festival loos.
