I think the fact that it’s happening in the 21st century is exactly what makes it so shocking. We always think it can never happen and we’re always wrong.

The way I read it SB , he’s put his nuclear special forces on nuclear deterrent alert ?
he needs bumping off pronto.
Something we can agree on here, Sticky...He needs a bullet...pronto.
Meaning he expected a nuclear strike from NATO, am I wrong?
Question Author
Read it again Bobbi

Deterrence in this instance has no meaning
He is telling his nuclear weapons forces to make preparations

From the link :

"For this reason I order the minister of defence and the chief of general staff to put deterrent forces on special combat duty."

The move will heighten fears across the West that Russian forces could use nuclear weapons in the conflict with Ukraine.
It might be only the personnel he wants to use as opposed to the weapons.
it's just posturing, his whole approach up to now has been to try and paint NATO and Ukraine as the aggressors and he's the victim just trying to defend his country from the big bad wolf.

Absolutely
Atm the best the west can hope for is that there is a Russian general with the cojones to maybe organise a military coup ?
There must be more than one high ranking officer with a conscience ?
If not it is quite frightening that a madman can maintain such an iron grip
It is almost unprecedented

I can name many.
Uncle Joe Stalin for one.

In the 21st century modern era ?
Another megalomaniac wielding such power whilst invading neighbouring countries whilst having access to and readying his forces to prepare nuclear weapons ?

Name away !

That is my point
Why does everyone feel the need to make a comparison to Hitler or Stalin or Pol Pot ?
Shall we go as far back as Ghengis Khan ?
I am talking about the 21st century
There is currently nobody as megalomaniacal or despotic as Putin with access to nukes
The west are obviously very fearful of him hence their reluctance in the recent past to do anything about Crimea nor assassinating foreign dissidents and using novichok in the uk
The only hope is for some type of coup or a Sadat style assassination
stickybottle , if you wanted answers to be limited to the 21st century then you should have made that clear, or are you just looking for an argument.
Please let's not start nit-picking and arguing again on another thread about such a heartbreaking and worrying situation.
kim jong-un is just as mad, but im sure china have him in hand so to speak, only hope for russia is a military coup.
Fender, I think a coup is out of the question.
Sticky, your post at 14:05 mentioned nothing about the 21st century, nor did it mention nuclear weapons
