Steve Baker told the BBC's Nick Robinson a growing rebellion from Tory MPs over gatherings in No 10 "looks like checkmate" for the prime minister.
The former Brexit minister - seen as influential backbench figure - said the current situation was "appalling, and the public are rightly furious".

What is it with Senior Tories and Brexiteers ? They all appear dissatisfied with Boris

I posted somewhere else that a certain brand of Brexiteer, of which I would imagine Steve Baker is one (Andrew Bridgen is another), might be keen to offload Johnson as they don't like the way Brexit is looking under him.
In my view, while a change of leader would almost certainly benefit the Tories, if they got their way in that respect it would probably spell disaster for the party because I doubt whether voters really want a party with the deregulation fundamentalists at the helm.

Anyway, it isn't just them of course.

If Boris was in anyway concerned about this country, and lets face it that's normally why you want to become PM, then he would go now because the longer he stays the more damage he is doing. Nothing else will get done while this keeps droning on. Go now and let someone else get downing street up and running again, because no one is going to cast a blind eye to all this now or later on.

The most right-wing Tory MPs don't like Boris, they only agreed to him being leader in their desperation to get Brexit done, depending on who you listen to Brexit is now either done or not getting done (Baker is the latter camp), either way - time to get rid of the chump of a leader.
