No one in particular -is it important?
No. I just wondered who you thought needed an English language lesson.
Did you really now?

No lesson in the English language was intended . It was a follow on from Deskdiary's remark. Sorry if it offended you.
but hotel IS pronounced with the H isnt it? At least it is in my part of the world
bednobs, yes I thought I'd made a mistake 'but I do say 'otel not Hotel, its all to do with how you personally pronounce English. Best not say anymore though or ladybirdy will go off on one again lol!
Thanks for the diversion - I think I got away with it.
Santa sees everything ;o)
//NJ my apologies, I was being rude to make a point,..//

I forgive you, Auntie. But….

//Most of the kids, and I would think a vast majority of the children, have no idea who the people are behind the names of their 'houses'.//

I would find that to be a major shortcoming on the part of the school. I was taught about the four people after whom my school’s four houses were named within a week of joining as a pupil. It took a few minutes to tell us a bit about each of them.

Here’s a diversionary cat amongst the pigeons: does the word “hotel” begin with an “h” or a “h”?
I agree NJ, the school would be failing if they had not taught about the person behind the house name. I too had a private education and although there were borders all pupils participated in the house system. We had names such as Frobisher and Drake and we were taught about all of them, not just the house to which you were allocated.

I do wonder why they would have a name such as JK Rowling. At my school it would simply have been Rowling, same for Churchill.
While we're at DD. Why oh why do some people on here constantly write to instead of too?
It's just a social media site piggy. people do it from phones and often in a hurry. There are also people not from the UK.

It really doesnt matter on this site.
NJ // Here’s a diversionary cat amongst the pigeons: does the word “hotel” begin with an “h” or a “h”?//

Point taken, but we were referring to written language not spoken. Honourable begins with 'h' but in standard spoken English the h is silent. Hence, an honorable gentleman. etc.
//but I do say 'otel //

... and sound like Rene's MiL, Fanny La Fan. Rene though that she was a a little old flying mammal.
^^^^^^^^^^^^ are you feeling ok?
Just got back after walking my mutt. I think we both enjoyed it.
I was taught at an all girls Boarding School that hotel was a French word and the h was silent and I have stuck with that all my life without ever thinking about it. Incidentally the teacher who taught me that was French.
That's why I pronounce hotel 'otel and garage 'gar-rage'.
Did someone say does Marcus Rashford gvie to charity
why - yes he does! - I hope he does it by GiftAid !

Marcus Rashford has donated £20m to charities, equating to 125% of his personal worth. That, really, should be enough to see him roundly celebrated. Of the top ten donors in the United Kingdom, it is Rashford who sits far out in front.

Marcuth hath got an MBE
Cruddas donated to the Tory party and agreed yes he DID think of trying to get to the House of Lords !

so whoever it was see above
get your respectoscope out baby!
// that hotel was a French word and the h was silent //

foo ! or should I say - fou ?

and paree - how dja pronounce that - Pariss or Paree
by which we can see that being a French word is irrelevant and that also the meaning may change ( or never be)
the-dansant - - all the rage in the twenties and thirties - the French dont have them, and it refers in Fransh to a meal that jiggles

and when doo dah said to Miss Marple - it is a case of shershay la shantoosy

the singer in a band at er a the dansant would be referrred to as a shantoosy ( spelt chanteuse)

You really all knew this and are at a loose end this evg innit?
how do you pronounce "hotel california" APG?
'otel californie if I'm speaking French. ;-P
