It is hard to imagine how one would feel in those circumstances, pat. Bereft would not begin to cover it. I have often grieved for a pet that died but that was the way of the greatest loss to date. Having a pet stolen is new ground I could never contemplate, please God.

Welcome news indeed. What is concerning is the brazen way criminals are snatching dogs. The following made national news at the beginning of last month:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-58183673
It seems almost unbelievable that dog walkers are advised now to vary the routes and times of their walks. Good grief! These are dog walkers, not employees taking the days takings to the bank.
Excellent news indeed and my little dog Jill would be petrified if she was stolen and taken away for me and all she holds dear, like lb's little dog. It doesn't bear thinking about to be honest. Feel so sad for the many dogs that have never been found.

Our animals are family members and if a dog got stolen we would be devasted. The financial value of a pet doesn't come into the equation.

I really can't understand people like Canary who obviously have no idea how pets matter to people. He/she must be totally without emotion.
Hardly surprising so many dogs have been stolen with the money they are fetching these days. Easy money for heartless, greedy people

I don't think this new law will deter pet thieves - the current law certainly doesn't.

Choux,

I completely agree.
// Yet another unnecessary law - it's theft, simple.// canary
canary is that icon, greta thornberg?
she would probabaly cook and eat the dog

takes into account victim distress
we had a dog stolen
they took the batch and left the dog
very distressing
always thought the batch said - hello new master
and the dog was more " go away, I know what you are at"
Was that the last you saw of her, peter?

Good BA. It would be the not knowing how your dog was being treated and the knowledge that it would be missing its loving owner terribly.
It's about ruddy time that this law was passed. In my eyes, animal thieves are pure scum and deserve to be properly punished. Preferably left in a room with a couple of hungry, irate rottweilers.
Rocky - worse punishment would be with a couple of JR terriers.

They should get some old, harmless-looking person to walk a nice GSD Police Dog - the dog 'might' accidentally bite the baddies in the gonads whilst apprehending them
Are my pet mice and crocodile protected?
We keep our front gate padlocked and we are in the process of buying CCTV to protect our girls, I think our breed is possibly to big to handle, too costly to keep and rare enough that they stand out and any puppies advertised would immediately be brought to the attention of every breeder in the UK, but we ain't taking no chances!
Good thinking, RATTER.
I suspect your girls have gorgeous temperaments and would happily greet anyone prepared to make a fuss of them. Are they "barkers" when someone approaches your home?
Quite right, Ratter - after all, look at horse thefts.....and I am not just talking Shergar ones...
Choux, you are correct, they would appoach anybody in a friendly manner, one may bark but not aggressively. Whist they are very big, they would make useless guard dogs.
I reckon your best bet is to keep them wet and muddy. Once they get their front paws up on someone's shoulders and lick their faces the thieves will be suitably marked for ID purposes ;)
This law should have been passed several years ago.
Stealing a member of your loved family should have severe consequences.
