gawd frankly I'm amazed they are allowed in at all now. They should be confiscated and returned at home time the first time after that they should be forfeited and given to charity. Madness, they learn ugger ball anyway these days without talking rowlocks on Twitfacegram all day, madness.

I agree they are far too much of a distraction
yeah right TTT
All mobiles at my sons school are taken in, stored away and then handed back at close of play.

That's good tiggs.
No it’s a stupid idea: schools should able to manage the use of phones, which like it or not are a part of life.
Ours does, and I’m sure most do.

And there was never any trouble in school prior to 2007?

Of course they should not be banned.

Godwins's law after only 6 posts, that must be some kind of record.
Here the phones are handed to the class teacher at the start of lessons and returned when they are ready to go home
Yes - I'm surprised phones are allowed in class at (some) schools. Having said that classroom disruption was quite common at my grammar school in the 50s/60s stemming probably from a teacher failing to interest the class & failing to keep order. Baiting of some of the teachers was cruel sometimes.
Or without talking rubbish on The Answer Bank all day, as some seem to do.

Should be thrashed and sent down for life. *savages/scum (* delete where applicable).

All they learn is rhyming slang.
Williamson is just making it up.

// "Mobile phones are not just distracting, but when misused or overused, they can have a damaging effect on… mental health and well-being. I want to put an end to this, making the… day mobile-free. //

Perhaps they can set an example and ban it in the Palace of Westminster. The PMs wife sends him hundreds of texts a day, no wondering he is constantly distracted to the point of being hopeless.
Williamson is correct. They are distracting and can certainly lead to mental problems, if not illness. A friend of mine discovered her son was falling asleep in school. Investigations found that he was waking up during the night to take part in Facebook and Twitter dialogue. He was 13.

There is no reason for a pupil to have a mobile in the classroom and there is little doubt that they are disruptive. The fact that they are "part of life" is hardly the point. Televisions are part of life but I would not expect pupils to be allowed to watch one whilst being taught.

I agree they should also be banned in the chamber of the House of Commons.

Some of the schools here keep phones throughout the day. I'd like to see calculators banned too.
As I said before NJ, any school with anything already bans phones in class except where needed: and believe it if not they are actually used for work sometimes.
This is control freakery of an unhelpful nature: the fact head teachers aren’t rushing to support it should tell you everything you need to now about exactly the value of this
Perhaps Mr TTTs employers should ban mobile phones. It is clearly distracting him from his work.
Totally agree with NJ at 11.16.
Ichkeria, I don't regard anything that's done in the interests of better education as 'control freakery'. Phones are distracting.
NJ,
Your anecdote about a child using a mobile phone during the night is meaningless in a discussion about them being use in schools. That child should clearly have his phone taken away by his parents until he is more mature.
Saying phones cause mental health issues and are a distraction while still using yours is hypocritical. If you are taken in by Williamson’s bogus posturing then you would have to support mobile phones being banned in the workplace, at home and in public buildings.
Sunk, your post doesn't make a lot a sense. Phones can become an obsession - in fact they are for a lot of people, especially young people - and that's not healthy.
