Significant numbers of the population were not vaccinated until recently. First doses reached 25m (about half the adult population) around the middle of March. Since then there has been around 150,000 new cases (out of the 4.5m total). There are still over 10m adults who have received no vaccine and about another 12m who have only received one shot.

Thank you NJ
We gave the world the Kent variant, which was more infectious.

The variant from India is even more infectious still, and we allowed it in too readily. With our stronger links to India than most of Europe, it is attacking us first.
The total number of confirmed cases of Covid 19 in the UK, per one hundred thousand people in the population, stood at 6,588 on 30 May. (i.e. about 6.6% of the UK population have had, or currently have, Covid-19).

That's behind the figures for Montenegro, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Sweden, Serbia, Lithuania, Estonia, Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Georgia, France, Portugal, Hungary, Cyprus, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Armenia, North Macedonia, Austria, Italy and Latvia - and those are just comparisons with other European countries. The situation is far worse in some other parts of the world.

So where does "highest", in your post, come from, Bobbi?
At one point we did have more confirmed cases than all those countries (I'm not talking cases per 100,000 ... just cases).

I think our rate is better than other countries now due to our lockdown measures and vaccine rollout. Thank God we left the EU when we did or we'd have been in a pile of ***.
Matt Hancock

and he meets his inquiry team today

They'll see whether he lied? What I want to know is that Hancock said a mask and gloves was enough to go to the grocery store. When I got there, everyone else had clothes on.

Why did he say this?
We'er a big country. And the vaccine's dont stop you getting infected, but may reduce the chances.. The main benifit is if you get it your much less likely to get it so bad you die or need to go into a hospital even if your old
Also the groups who socialise more or work in crowded places are younger and not yet vaxxed partly or fully or in ethnic or religious or deprived groups who are less likely to take the vacine
