I fly a fair bit - correction - I did fly a fair bit before the world went mad, usually at least half a dozen times a year, and I cannot remember the last time my passport wasn't scanned at each end, whether it be by somebody in a booth or self-service, so I think TTT is right.

airlines get fined if they transport people that are not allowed into the destination country. It is in their interests to reduce these fines. Vaccinations are already checked for some destinations even now, how do you think that works 237sj? Perhaps you could outline your knowledge of IT systems that leads you to your beliefs.
Passports are not scanned at both ends. They are scanned at the arrival destination.
passports easily could be scanned at both ends. I understand that they are checked at the airline desk as you book in.
Question Author
of course they do! These days you do it yourself anyway and get a boarding pass. When did you last travel 237sj?
here's the instructions for self check in, for example

Question Author
all the passports in the world are the same for a reason! gawd elp us!
Not these days. Self booking, self check in, self baggage check, self boarding (in some cases) These days in aviation, the first person may well be the cabin crew member at the door of the aircraft.
Question Author
....yes self book in, what's the first thing you do? Scan your passport! derrr!
Sorry, you've lost me now LOL.
ttt your own link says nothing about scanning your passport except in the title
Question Author
so how do you think you are identified by the machine? to the extent that a boarding pass can be issued? They scan the passport on the page that is designed for every machine in every port in the world to read! The machine or the person at the check in desk essentially do the same thing, check id, check valid ticket, check eligibility to fly etc. Gawd elp us!
Question Author
do you think any wally can turn up and scan a plane ticket and get on a plane?
I`d give up and go to bed if I was you Buddy.
according to your link with a credit card
Question Author
just think it through it's like talking to a 5 year old.
so your own link is talking a load of rubbish?
From the link,

"Identify Yourself

Walk up to an open kiosk. The kiosk will prompt you to identify yourself by inserting a credit card, typing in your flight confirmation code (locator number) or entering your frequent flyer number. Enter your identifying information using the touch screen. You will be able to touch a “clear” or “backspace” key if you make a mistake"

No mention of having to use a passport...

Question Author
how? the first line says "identify yourself with your id or passport" - how does the machine do that other than by scanning the passport?
It says that in the pictograph but even then, the important words are, "OR ID", using a passport is optional.

You don't need a passport on the way out, nobody gives a toss if you're leaving they only want to know who's coming in.
in all honesty i havent been on a plane for around 4 years, but i'd be more likely to believe SJ on these matters who i believe until quite recently worked in aviation
