would you accept a tax increase to give the NHS staff a bigger pay rise? If everyone who clapped agreed they could pay them more but I wonder how many would actually agree to paying for it?

My first wife was an ITU Sister, but she quite often used to work agency shifts as well, which cost the NHS significantly more.

Time dims the memory, and this is going back to the mid 90s, but I recall her working Xmas Eve night in her normal capacity, and then Xmas Day night she worked on the same ITU ward, with the same patients, many of the same staff, only she was working an agency shift...and she earned about £200!
rowan, I understand what you say, and no doubt the money they get is well paid to a point, but really this situation is a whole different ball game now, in so much as they are risking their lives, and of their families to do this job now. Anyone who does a job were there is high risk of death or injury gets paid on the strength of that. They didn't join the NHS to put their lives at risk, a deep sea diver off an oil rig knows what he/she is signing up for.
the police/fire service won't be getting a pay increase as far as i am aware, and they are at risk as much as anyone -
If the Nhs was privatised nurses would be able to shop around for better pay. Why isn't the union demanding that?
because they would be out of a job. No one wants a privatised health service let alone the unions.
we do have already private medicine, you get what you pay for, and that can be a lot of money, can ordinary folk afford it, by and large no, its the well off who could and probably do go private
I was just making the point that it's the union doing all the bleating not the staff and who's backing them to the hilt, those other poorly paid people at the BBC.
we pay into the NHS, or most of us do or have done. No need to change it now, though if they got rid of alot of the bureacracy then more money could undoubtedly be found for the doctors, nurses.
some staff have been interviewed and have made their voices heard, they all feel they deserve a better pay rise than one percent.
do the nurses, doctors get overtime payments, does any one know.
Yes, they do, Emmie. My neighbour also works for an agency in the same hospital doing the same job as her NHS role. She works 4 nights a week for the NHS then more hours for the agency.
so most of these workers won't be too badly off, i know that its the fact of covid and having to work harder, possibly longer hours, but surely the pay isn't that bad already. Or am i just wishful thinking.
how much do doctors make and the higher echelons...id give them 0
emmie 15.05, Like I said in my post at 14.34 you sign up knowing the risks in the police force and the fire service. You don't sign up to be a doctor or a nurse knowing your life is at risk, every day you turn up for work. Funny how everyone were clapping and couldn't say a bad word against them for the last 12 months, while we were all in our comfy homes away from it all. Its not taken long to turn bad ways again. I'm alright jack again.
Perhaps not paying them when they take sick leave would give them a good pay rise and also discourage those that pull a sicky when they needn't ( just a thought)
Some seem to know a lot about pulling a sicky. Well the older you get the more one will need the services of the NHS, its only then it will hit home ( again) why they need to been paid.
Just read woofgang's link "Seven weeks a year paid holidays" for gods sake.
Try seven consecutive weeks of nights in A&E dealing with druggies and drunks punching you in the face while your trying to treat them, for gods sake.
Some as in?
Just because I put a thought forward does not constitute me knowing about pulling a sicky basically because I never did!!!
So don't have sly digs , instead say who you mean!
