Some of these photos are shocking...some show a lack of respect for what the building represents.

// Anyone who things the right wing extremists are going to lie down and take this is deluded. //

Of course I agree with you, but the solution isn't appeasement. Calling for an enquiry into baseless conspiracy theories merely serves to give them undeserved legitimacy. Calling for impeachment of the president who helped to incite this may make them madder, but it re-establishes the principle that everybody is accountable for their actions, no matter the level of their office.

One other thing, ymb. Focusing on just the Senate, yesterday morning we were expecting around a dozen Republican Senators to object to the results from certain States, including Georgia and Nevada. Notably, Kelly Loeffler, who has just lost her own election, was prepared to stand up and call Georgia elections illegitimate. Yet, after the riot broke out, she did not, and backed down, saying that she could not "in good conscience" continue to object to the Electoral College results.

Doesn't this speak to how meaningless her challenges were in the first place? Nor was she alone in backing down once she saw what her empty rhetoric was inciting. For so many of Trump's supporters, this has been a game. It's been fun to see how much he winds up the "libtards", fun to watch him spew twaddle and undermine the institutions in the US, and fun for those who were holding on to his coattails and advancing their own careers. It was all a game for them, for so many years.

It isn't a game now. Trump has finally promised a peaceful transition, only a few months too late (and, frankly, four-and-a-half years too late: he didn't commit to conceding gracefully in 2016 either, and we were only spared the consequences then because in the event he won). Too late, though; the damage has been done. Trump has established himself as the spokesman for millions of people who hang on to his every lie.

The country has to push back. Giving him and his lies legitimacy serves only to undermine the institutions that Trump swore to uphold. He was lying when he took that oath, too. He's always lied. He's always put himself above everything else. People have paid for it, and people will continue to pay for it, as long as we continue to tolerate the suggestion that he and his supporters deserve their dangerous nonsense to be taken seriously.
Thanks for posting the Toomey speech ellipsis - it would be worth some of us listening to it ...
I was mixing some of Senator Toomey’s speech up with that of Mitch McConnell. McConnell may have been late to the party but his was still an impressive speech
Mitch McConnell has collaborated with Trump enthusiastically for every vicious step of his nasty reign. He cannot be allowed to distance himself from this at the last minute in order to appear statesmanlike, regardless of how good a speechgiver he is. He shares responsibility.
I am less familiar with Pat Toomey but if he was a Trump toady before yesterday then the same is true for him... these people have enabled this man to the point of real danger and they do not deserve to be commended for changing their minds only when the fire they started unexpectedly reached them.
Completely agree untitled. What a set of cowardly scumbags some of these people are. Aiding and abetting the lunatic every step of the way, and then coming out with high falutin speeches about the sanctity of democracy at the last moment. There actions or lack of them are on record.
Looks like boom time ahead for manufacturers of flags for the dregs to wrap themselves in.

God bless America etc.

It was ever so.
Many republicans have opposed Trump all the way especially Senator Toomey.
Even Mitch McConnell had broken ranks before. There is more joy in heaven etc
The real headbangers are the ones who STILL opposed the counts even after the events of yesterday.
Needing a leader to follow, it does not necessarily follow one knows what kind of leader to follow. Stupid doesn't recognise stupid even when it sees itself in a mirror. This does not excuse such behavior but it does explain it. Responsibility is inherent in action, ignorant and/or willful.
