A truly great journalist - not afraid to make waves to expose wrong doing - Thalidomide for one.
A Lancashire lad.

RIP Sir Harold.
Never knew much about him until today's news bulletin.
Yes, we could do with his kind of journalism today.
a very fine editor.
Dame Harold
big in the seventies and only er freshly dead...

For the young - Thalidomide maimed a few thousand babies here and they sued. The big pharma entered a plea and then kept it under wraps for ten years ! no discussion under the sub judice rule

1972 Denning a very famous law lord ( more famous even perhaps than our very own NJ - am I allowed to say that?(*)) said ten years of doing nuffin wasnt sub judice

1962 Dame Harold for it was he - called Philby a spy ! and he fled - forty years after he should have been identified

as in teh Dennis Nilsen saga - were we really as sluggish as that fifty years ago?

er RIP Dame Harold

(*) Association footballer Paul Gascoigne sued on privacy ( action failed - pre 1999 HRA ) and the initial exchange in court was reported somewhat like this ....

(J) Judge Hooly for it was he: dont we know the law on this?
QC1 for our Paul: m'lord I think there are points to clarified....
my client Paul Gazza Gacoigne////
(J) Gazza ? (Yes m;lord) Is nt there an opera about Gazza?
QC I am willing to be instructed ....
(J) La Gazza Ladra - the silken Ladder
QC my lords knowledge is all-encompassing ....
[sounds like a night on AB]
the QC continued - My client is famous
J - is he? I havent heard of him
QC more famous perhaps than the Beatles
J oh I know who they are - you wont get me on that one
[note: Melford steveson remarked once - what are the Beatles?] to show his otherworldliness

case eventually dismissed - the DT court correspondent carried on: There is an opera La Gazza Ladra - the thieving magpie and another - La scala di sete - The Silken Ladder.
Neither libretto features an association footballer

have fun boys and girls
