Went into a Kingston on Thames newsagent yesterday, man in front of me didn’t have a mask, lady behind me didn’t have a mask. Guy behind counter had one, as did I, but he didn’t say a word to them. There is a police station across the road, six police sitting in a van outside. Nothing done.

Agree absolutely Deskdiary. Let the neurotics wear masks or, better still, stay at home and let the rest of us carry on living our lives.
I thought we already agreed - wear one or don't.

I have said it twice today alone.

Why then are we still getting endless threads about it.
6 Police in a Van,probably surfing the Internet or Playing cards.Don't forget they are short-staffed.!!
If you don't wear one you risk a fine from the police, possibly refusal of service and the opprobium other shoppers.

Most other things we can be "done" for make sense but in this we are effectively being forced to do something we don't believe is right.
Simply offer one of the many exemptions to wearing one.
^^^and then get some idiot having a go you at for not wearing one.

Hi smurf, looking at your OP are you suggesting the Police should form a firing squad or similar?
Get with it!
Is it true that we are all going to be forced to stand on one leg and go eek? Apparently it kills the virus stone dead. Look out for a government announcement.
I'm really interested to know how YMB's daughter knew the assistant was shouting.
bedknobs you can tell by the persons expression, even if you can't see their mouths
I prefer to wear one, although it appears lots do not.
thanks woof gang, I didn't know. I am not deaf myself so didn't know you could tell by someones expression how loud they were talking. Especially with a mask on, where presumable you can only see the eyes

We mostly use one or the other of two local s-markets, as we are on first name terms with most of the staff we wear masks to keep the peace.
YMB, I would complain to the Branch Manager and to Customer Services as that is not acceptable. In the meantime, could you or your daughter not print off an A5 or A6 sheet explaining your daughter's deafness and asking the other person to remove the face covering to enable lip reading as the Regulations permit?

You might want to make it a wee bit snapper and then laminate it or take a photo and save it to the 'phone.

Action on Hearing Loss (the trading name of the RNID) has a sheet that can be downloades.

It wouldn't be clear to me I was being asked to remove my face covering and I fed that back to them a while ago.

A wee bit snappier rather than snapper...

or, y'know, waiting to raid a paedophile grooming gang or something... who can tell?
bedknobs we were taught basic stuff by the RNID about communicating with people who are hearing impaired in my job in the NHS. Generally what helps is to face them, slow your speech a little, deepen the pitch of your voice a bit, or at least don't go shrill. if a bit more volume will help then its important to keep your expression pleasant...oddly its a common thing when people raise their voices for them to look as though they are frowning or irritated. The other thing, and should be the first thing of course is to ask the individual what helps them.
that's interesting, woofgang, being hard of hearing myself I find shrill voices easier to pick up than deep booming ones. I suppose it depends on what frequencies you have trouble with?
