\\Thunberg said in a statement that “like the climate crisis, the coronavirus pandemic is a child-rights crisis” that will affect youngsters now and in the long-term, especially the most vulnerable.//

Childs rights ?, its affecting everyone.

//She's not wrong about climate change,...// She's wrong insofar as her criticism should be directed towards those who are exacerbating the problem to the greatest degree. That is China (30% of global emissions) the USA (14%) and India (7%). That's half of all global emissions. The UK is responsible for just over 1%. It could reduce its share to nothing...

// ... it somehow has more weight and validity than from a scientist who disagrees with her ... //

Again, a weird refusal to address the flaw in your argument, namely that most, and indeed nearly all, reputable scientists largely agree with her. Climate Change is a real and present threat, and your weird insistence that it is, at best even money as to whether that's true undermines the credibility of your dismissal of Thunberg.
..and by the way Andy, I just checked the meaning of capitulation, and no, you're wrong. It's exactly what I thought it was.

Now there's something we can agree on. //

If, as you claim, you have read threads I have posted on in the last ten years, you will be aware that piffle like this derails them, and gets them terminated.

If you have something to discuss about the thread, please offer, if it is about your perverse interest in me personally, don't bother, it will be ignored in the interest of keeping a good thread intact.

I think it is the flaw in your argument that you fail to grasp - that if a crinkly scientist says something in agreement with Ms T, it is largely ignored, but because she says it, as she has been told to do, it suddenly takes on the significance of the original text of the bible.

It's not her argument I am at issue with, it is the manipulation of her as a vulnerable child to push the views of her parents that I find repugnant.
Andy, I honestly think you do the girl a disservice. And she is nowhere near as manipulated as you believe. In interviews (not rehearsed podium speaches), she comes across as quite bright and articulate.

Sure, she is influenced by her parents, as all children/teens are, but her passion and belief in whay she says is apparent. She's been around this cause long enough to have more than basic knowledge about what is happening. I do agree that the books leave a bad taste in the mouth, but she's no clueless little girl.
It seems that i can't spell speeches.
You can pretend it isn't her argument you have issue with all you like, but, as we both know, you've never taken the idea that humans cause, and can therefore prevent to an extent, the present epoch of Climate Change seriously.
And finally we have the subtle threat of oooerrr 'termination'. This is why I couldn't keep away. That and being locked down at home and bored tishless of course. Endless entertainment.

'Keeping a good thread intact from you' is hilarious by the way. You've ruined more good threads than I've made answers.

Under normal conditions, I could walk into my local high school and pick out a dozen bright articulate driven socially conscious teenage girls who are the intellectual and moral equal of Ms Thunberg in every way that matters.

So what makes her so different, that suddenly she is the answer to climate change, and we have to listen to her ramblings?

Manipulation, and good management.

Oh, and cynical manipulation by her parents - that's where this horrible nonsense begins and ends.
jim - // You can pretend it isn't her argument you have issue with all you like, but, as we both know, you've never taken the idea that humans cause, and can therefore prevent to an extent, the present epoch of Climate Change seriously. //

Actually, I do - but I might believe it because a qualified scientist tells me - I am never going to believe it because the human equivalent of a puppet on a string tells me, however committed and fervent she appears to be.
//so what makes her so different, that suddenly she is the answer to climate change, and we have to listen to her ramblings//

She's not the answer, she's the figurehead. She's the one whose inspiring young people across the globe to look at climate change, and take responsibility for their futures. The face you refer to what she says as "her ramblings" says to me, despite your protestations, that you have no time for climate change as a whole, and you're about as likely to change your mind about that as Togo or SK are. At least they have the nerve to say they think it's all bullocks.
*the fact...
Has Ms Thunberg ever visited countries like Russia or China? Its pointless her haranguing western countries like Britain and the USA when the worst offender is China.Perhaps she should visit there sometime...if they let her in that is.
You know and I know that she'd make zero difference in China or Russia, and might well put her safety at risk. Better (from her point of view) to put pressure on western countries, who could possibly put pressure economically, on the likes of China.
Mozz - put pressure on western countries?

She's a teenager, she couldn't 'put pressure' on a sixth form debate!!!
Remember what I said? She inspires others to take up her cause. If she has enough support, then enough pressure could be put on governments to act.
Remember what I said?

Joan of Arc had the same idea, it didn't end well.
Couldnt she take with her some of the "climate extinction"mob. They could tell the Chinese authorities that they werent really rich upper middle class layabouts, but actually true members of the working-class and how they hated us evil capitalists in the West.
