All the war-propaganda, all the screaming and lies and hatred, comes invariably from people who are not fighting.

George Orwell
A more serious problem with the support for self-employed people is that it's based on tax returns for April 2016 to April 2019. This is clearly far from ideal for those who only started self-employed work in 2019, who will get either nothing, or a pittance that hardly reflects their actual losses.

It will certainly affect those who have tried to play down their profits...
Well, those too. But some honest people are going to lose out, which strikes me as more important.
// APG, I know 2 self employed businesses that are getting money //

3T knows a lot of things - these will be ltd cos or partnerships

self employed are sole traders

this a the usual AB boLLoo of 'I know Mrs doo-dah darn the road - the one that had two husbands at the SAME time - her you know -an SHE got child benefit for her half-siblings even tho they were 75, 60 and 51 - I know that for a fact - yeah ! foo! end of! "
9.13 I missed that lie, not like me.
I assume the problem is potential fraud, jim. It might be too easy for fraudsters to conjure up a past business
Pixie -the upper limit is net profits of £50,000 or under
Foreigner, was she, pp?
fiction-factory Fraudsters could not benefit as the figures are taken from your Business Tax returns. If you have not submitted a Business Ta return you will not get any money. Just to clarify the scheme is open to Self-Employed, Sole Traders and Partnerships.

You can be self employed and employ people -such as a hairdresser will have their own business (self employed) but may have two or three others 'on the books'. The Money you refer to will be for the staff , furloughed wages, not the business owner. The business owner (self employed) can apply for a loan to cover their own personal expenses if they wish.
In both world wars most of the country was behind the government, but most of the country didn’t know the true horrors many soldiers were facing. David Lloyd George apparently said to one newspaper editor “If people really knew [the truth], the war would be stopped tomorrow. But of course they don’t know, and can’t know.”.

That couldn’t happen in the internet and social media age. We would still know that there is a shortage of PPE whether or not journalists reported it, for example, and many would question why. In that respect journalists are merely asking the questions many want answering.
Lived in a caravan I believe Spice.
No doubt there were some reasons for it, but there's still no point in denying that newer self-employed people will lose out in the current scheme.
The upper limit is £50000 (rather than £50000 or under). I assume the govt thinks that anyone self employed with trading profits of more than £150000 over 3 years will have saved something for a rainy day.
£50,000 is not a lot of money these days, its not even the wages of two teachers.
APG- you have misunderstood at 11:34 I think. I'm not talking about fraud by companies already submitting HMRC returns. I'm talking about why only businesses that had sent the returns for 2018/19 so new businesses would comply to prove they were genuine.
Now if away can be found to verify that they existed and some way could be found to assess the profits of newish operations that would be good but it sounds far too messy and open to fraud to me
APG //£50,000 is not a lot of money these days//
It is to some people including me.
I think many of those with net profits of £50000 and a good accountant would be better off than the figures might suggest. Having said that I'm not sure why it's not just payable to all but capped at something similar to the employed figure of £2500 a month (£30000 pa)
Has your business ceased completely, APG? You could always try UC
