Proof that you can be rewarded for being an absolute bell end.

Also proof that the honours system is outdated and should be discontinued.

Harry Billenge got his for his works for charity, one of the last of the D Day landing soldiers, he has worked tirelessly to get a memorial erected for those who didn't come home, well done that man..

I always quite liked IDS. Though the awarding of honours to the unworthy grates somewhat. I ignore it and them.
The big news isn't who got one, but who didn't, answer: John Bercow who becomes first in ex-speaker in 230 years NOT to get a seat in Lords.
Surely something to rejoice!

Indeed. And only 75 years after risking his neck for this country (for a little over two shillings (10p) a day) and working tirelessly ever since to see recognition for his fallen comrades who risked theirs too and lost. An MBE (apart from the BEM, the lowliest of honours).

Meanwhile, Andy Murray risked thirst and exhaustion on those inhospitable fields in London SW19 to overcome the Serbian threat for a meagre £1.6m. Six months later, and OBE (one step up from Mr Billenge's award). Another four years being up to his neck in sponsorship and money and a Knighthood is bestowed upon him. Far more deserving.
doesn't seem fair when you put it like that
I can live with the fact that I won't always approve of all of the recipients but will continue to be pleased about those who do deserve recognition getting it.
me too...
I always wonder why one or two players are singled out for honours when they play in a team. All or nothing would be fairer I think.

Best Answer to Emmie. Harry Billenge is exactly the kind of person we should be honouring.

An MBE (apart from the BEM, the lowliest of honours).//

at least the French poilu who was the last man to fight in the Great War had insight into his Legion D'honneur IV ieme classe
i have only go' zees because I lived to be over 100 !

you cant have two lowliest for chrissakes, even Brenda Hale would acknowledge that one
Brexit Brenda - you know -----that one
That's the point Mozz, people like that are honoured - we had a thread on it last night.

However it doesn't fit with those who simply want to whinge and moan.
Bet there were a few on UC who were choking on their cornflakes this morning when reading of IDS's knighthood. No frills cornflakes, of course:-//

I missed that thread Lynne. As I said, I'm fine with the little guys getting honours. They deserve it. I'm even okay with someone like Elton John being honoured given the many millions he's raised for AIDS charities.

It's just when someone like IDS, who has made life markedly worse for tens of thousands of people gets honoured, it disgusts me.
That's fine, as I said if you read the lists of honours there will be some you aren't happy with obviously.

Perhaps it is just in my nature to concentrate on the good.

Your glass is half full while I'm after a top up.
Say when x
// An MBE (apart from the BEM, the lowliest of honours).//
you cant have two lowliest for chrissakes,

Poor wording on my part, Peter. How about "an MBE, the second lowliest of honours" or "an MBE, second only to the BEM as the lowliest of honours"?
The whole thing lost it's meaning decades ago.

Abolish the lot -- and the Lords.
I said all I have to regarding Stokes,
Awarded an honour I would have given him 9 months.
Iain Duncan Smith... bell-end simple as... whats more to say.
