From illegal immigrant to now chief executive of the Scottish Refugee Council.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7608461/Refugees-tell-horrific-journeys-Britain-crammed-lorries.html

Another illegal immigrant told Good Morning Britain ‘I think it exists because governments like Britain doesn’t have safer means to travel,' he said.

‘If there was civilised and ways that people can have safe passage then I wouldn’t have risked my life - I wouldn’t have been in that container.

He could always have applied for legal immigration.....
"Arsenal fan Mr. Al-Rashid..."
Can someone please explain what relevance his being an Arsenal fan has to the article
There are plenty of safe ways to travel. It's only those planning on committing an illegal entry that fail to find a suitable one. Surely they see it's no good finger pointing, they chose to make deals with smugglers.
Sorry AOG, that just proves to me that even if you arrive in the country by illegal means, you can still be a good citizen and make a useful, respected member of society. Illegal immigrants are by no means a definate drain on society.

Yesterday's tragic event just show how desperate folk are to make a better life for themselves, if they were there voluntarily.
The ends justify the means?
I do not believe illegal migrants should be allowed to stay. There is no point having an immigration policy if illegals can stay.

Irregardless of peoples potential illegal is illegal.
tend to agree with Cassa, illegals by and large should be shown the door, and told to use it.
"Illegal immigrants are by no means a definate drain on society."

Overall it is obvious that they have to be. Even the most productive of them will be fulfilling a role an unemployed native should fill. Besides the issue is not whether we can guarantee a particular individual would be an asset, it's about controlling population size and thus not overstretching resources, not to mention ensuring that the law is complied with.

I'd suggest that someone overly sympathetic to these lawbreakers is not the ideal person to have some authority in the field. One needs someone likely to be less emotive and more on the side of the laws & rules.
Illegal eh?

PAck his bags and send him on his way, as we should with all illegals.

Once they get the message that illegal entry is not tolerated and the only means is via a legal route it will stop, or at least curb, the people traffickers.
>Irregardless of peoples potential illegal is illegal.

Pardon?
You'll get into trouble tut tut

Regardless of people's potential, illegal is illegal.
;)Thanks OG. Reminded me of that sentence we were asked to punctuate at school: "that that is is that that is not is not"
I agree with the principle though Cassa

The Nazis would have had a hayday back in 1940s if our borders had been as open as they are today.
'Sorry AOG, that just proves to me that even if you arrive in the country by illegal means, you can still be a good citizen and make a useful, respected member of society. Illegal immigrants are by no means a definate drain on society.'

Indeed. AOG seems to have shot himself in the foot. Again.
I heard a discussion on the radio in the last few days which pointed out that the system for legal immigration into the UK is such as to more or less prevent immigration by those means (prohibitively complex and time consuming) and that the very few who eventually are accepted have taken years to get through the system. That being the case it is not difficult to understand why lots of people choose other means to mount an attempt.

One thing puzzles me though. Why are people interested in entering the UK rather than remaining in whichever country they have already got to ? I have the same question regarding people clamouring to get into the USA. Both countries strike me as unattractive due to the comparatively low prospects/standards and general chaos. But then I realise that precisely this is perhaps actually the attraction. In the USA there is little by way of a governance/management system so far as the individual is concerned while in the UK there is nominally a system but it is hopelessly inefficient, fragmented and chaotic and on the brink of collapse. Maybe in this is where some see an opportunity. In any case, the numbers reaching the UK illegally are tiny compared to the numbers entering most European countries.
//He could always have applied for legal immigration.....//

Yeh dead easy that. Your parents and brothers have been murdered and tossed into a mass grave and they are looking for you to do the same, while raping your young sisters. what do you do?....saunter up to the nearest immigration officer 'Hello Sir I am looking to apply for immigration, yes of course I have all my papers which I managed to grab before ISIS burnt down my house and killed all my family,oh yes,I can be available to get the next plane..thanks awfully old chap...
Could not make it up.
There are a certain contingent on here, b-f, who do nothing but make things up.
He wants safe passage for illegal immigrants. Potty!
This site is so terribly middle class right wing I'm alright jack its unbelievable. If you'd seen/heard some of the things I have to see/hear in my real world you may have a different view on refugees.
Big Fat Sigh.
banker_frank, it's a mistake to assume that others haven't seen and heard what you've seen and heard - and possibly more.
