// Speaking to the BBC this week, her lawyer said she would need to move to a Western country for her own safety. Several countries have offered her asylum.//

…but ….

Pakistan's authorities have struck a deal with a hard-line Islamist party to end the protest over her acquittal ….

As part of the deal, Asia Bibi will be barred from leaving the country, though it is unclear for how long.

The protesters will also be able to file an appeal to the Supreme Court over its decision to release her.

She was convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet Muhammad, but was acquitted earlier this week.

Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry defended the agreement against allegations the government was capitulating to extremists://

Capitulation to extremists? Clearly. What now for Asia Bibi?

I wonder what our favourite jurist (and MamyaLynne's best friend) knows about the Pakistani constitution in its revised form. I.e. post secular and Shia(!) Jinnah and now it's gone "Islamic state of Pakistan" . Its newly acquired Sharia elements might appear to be inconsistent (on a simple-minded reading by idiots like me) with the European Convention on Human Rights, but not to the creative thinkers who preside over that court.

These interesting legal novelties (de facto if not de jure) coming to any Midlands or Northern town or city near you.

Oops. Already arrived.
Did I say "de facto"?

I think it's Latin or Greek or something.

Doh doh doh.
On the other hand it could be Old French or even Middle English.

So many questions, so little time.

I'm not sure what the wider implications will be for Diplomacy, Trade, etc. but hope that the future for Asia Bibi will become calmer and less dangerous than it seems to be at present.

I am all for a country running itself according to its' own Laws and to the benefit of its' own citizens without the interference of outside agencies......I just wish that those Laws were more in-keeping with natural Human Rights and less reliant on the supposed utterings of beardy blokes from millenia past...
What is all this 'and MamyaLynne's best friend' business all about?

What a complete over reaction, some might say.
Right up to the point where the cavemen hang him and his client.

Still, it's only one lawyer and an unbeliever eh?

Cultural differences.
Can't the SAS go in and get this poor soul out ??
// about the Pakistani constitution in its revised form.//

very little - a frenz father worked there as a judge and spent time either on the bench or in prison.... gives you some idea how the legal system 'works' there.

jinnah seems to have been all things to all muslims

Jinnah went to Harrow ( School ) by the way
Could I ask vetuste_ennemi to desist in his silly game of bringing my name into his answers - now.

I have no clue on the intricacies of politics in Pakistan, what is happening is alien and abhorrent and I fear for this young woman and all like her.

I refer to your declared liking and admiration for Peter, Mamya. "Best friend" may be overstating it, but "friend" isn't.
Just answer the ruddy thread and leave me out of your replies.
What?

ve...you look like a complete twonk!! Leave Mamy alone!
My objection to Peter is his trivilalisation of the effects on the UK and Europe as a whole of importing ignorant bigots who think Asia Bibi should hang.

"Young"? Point of order m'[lud. Bibi is now over fifty, has been in custody and separated from her family for a decade.

Reason? No appellate judge until now would risk his life by quashing her patently false conviction.
How many of these savages will turn up in the UK given the profusion of opportunities to do so?
If she is granted asylum in the UK I would advise her not to settle in Bradford.
Or Sparkbrook Brum.
Stuck in prison for ten years for "blasphemy"?

What's the problem? "It's a judicial decision" for Mo's sake.
And she won't be safe in England. There's not a single Deobandi mosque in the Midlands and the North (that's most of them) who don't want Asia Bibi dead. We know that because for three years running the Pakistani Rehman sheikhs who think the murderer Mumtaz Qadri (he killed the Punjabi governor who opposed Pakistan's blasphemy laws) is a "martyr" have toured the UK for six weeks preaching to packed houses.
