Not a good idea imho.
They could name a day after anyone, it would bother me.
ummmm day nah! xx ;-)
There have been thousands of murders since Stephen Lawrence was murdered but how many victims can you name? How many have had inquiries into their deaths? How many deaths have led to changes in legislation?

Each victim means something to someone somewhere but it just so happens that this victim had a major impact.

If you think someone else or a disaster should be remembered, do something about it and write to your MP or start an online petition.
That was suppose to say wouldn't bother me.

Every year a they hold tournament in memory of my dad and uncle. Nobody is forced do it.
We can't even manage to celebrate our own St George's day decently!
Good grief.
How so, Ferlew?
Not in April, no. October maybe.
I know what you mean ferlew.

How many dragons does a man have to slay to get apathetic proles off their recliners and celebrating derring do?

Maybe if there was an app for it?
if they must, have a "victims'" day and make it a bank holiday.
Not happy about it. Much rather have had a proper St George's day

I'm surprised how many people come from places that didn't have St George's Day events - admittedly lots were yesterday so families could have fun together.
Not in favour of it at all. What is the actual reason?

Because he is black?
Because he was killed by racists?
Because of the blatant institutionally racist police?

No, I really don't understand it at all.

Yes, as others have said what about the others.
The name that instantly popped up in my head is Blair Peach... why not a Blair Peach day.
Battered to death on this day 23 April 1979 and unless something has happened that I have missed, his killer or killers has never been brought to justice.
Although it doesn’t bother me one way or the other - I don’t think it’s a good idea, because a) it’s not like the public are clamouring for it and b) as evidenced by some of the responses here - it’s really going to wind up a number of people, especially those on the political right.

Can you imagine...every bloody year from now on, we will have the same pro and anti arguments trotted out.

We already have to deal with the MOBOs, and the Notting Hill Carnival moans. This is is just more petrol on an already very boring fire.

Haha, selective understatement for a change. How about, seeing as it is all over the news, taking Nelson off the column and replacing him with a statue of Stephen Lawrence?
Ludicrous ,what about all the others of all ethnicities who are victims of violence? If we must have it why not a 'safer streets day' ?
Nah...
