I blame the Fosters. Must be quite an incentive to get into the team and then disappear if you aren't already Australian.
cameroon games participants have something of a history in this respect - in 2006 40 athletes from various nations (including Cameroon) went missing in Melbourne. of those, 2 from Cameroon were granted refugee status and are competing this year for Australia.
Just wait till 2022 and the games are in Birmingham.

I am sure dozens and dozens will go missing.

No, it's full up with them already.
who can blame them?
I think it would be more surprising if no one went missing during a Commonwealth Games.
It keeps happening. There is an annual international music festival at Confolens (near where I used to live) and one year the whole Cameroon equipe disappeared! :)
Probably happens at most international events.
Quite a few asked for asylum (Camaroons I think) after the 2012 Olympics.
