Deaths Among Homeless

According to a Freedom of Information Request filed by the Guardian (and supported by research from Crisis), the number of homeless people dying in the UK has doubled in the last 5 years.

Why do you think this has happened? Do you think anything should be done or should we just ignore it?

I've little knowledge of the subject but consider it a failure that citizens are in this position when we all pay taxes to get a good society. Maybe the issue is that the shelters are unattractive with many apparently saying that they don't want the violence etc. they see there and would rather be out. Probably needs more authoritative staffing.

you sleep outside in the cold and wet - likely have TB, and other things - you've spent your money on booze or drano ( Echo Falls is very chearp) - and everyone says

If we didn't have Councils and Police 'confiscating' homeless people's tents and sleeping bags it might help, along with a general intolerance by society. My mother had a colossal row with a local church in Hereford because they have erected shutters to stop homeless people sheltering in their doorway. No-one should have had shelter made more difficult to obtain this last winter whatever your perspective of how they are or why they are there, it's inhumane and it doesn't surprise me more people are dying.

Of course homeless people died when Labour ran the show, but the report concerns the fact that the number of deaths has doubled during the last 5 years - under a Tory government watch. Is that in any way surprising when some of their policies have driven the number of homeless up. I refer, of course, to the bedroom tax and benefit sanctions.

this is nothing to do with funding, most of the homeless are that way because they are off the pace, they cannot exist in the system.

I think there is a lot of truth in that. Not all of them but many.

Consider that rents have been increasing steadily for the past decade, while incomes have actually shrunk, the sanctions regime and "reforms" at DWP which have limited the ability of vulnerable people to receive help, it isn't hard to see why our institutions for dealing with this kind of problem are dysfunctional.

It isn't just a matter of funding (though that's certainly not irrelevant), it's a matter of ill-designed policy.

We shouldn't ignore it but also shouldn't ignore uncomfortable facts either.

Is there only me thinking that the numbers of immigrants who appear to think it is better on a UK street than a home in their own country may have had an impact on the numbers?

If the EU massive would like to give me an answer that would be good.

Odd one i know but thinking of it now i personally have never seen a foreign homeless person.
