well at least it would comply with old english law
you can only be tried and sentenced once for a thing

that you can be convicted on the convincing testimony of one witness who is also the accuser ?

and that we are returning to the old idea of "other evidence" - as in all it takes in 2018 is for a convincing liar to put you behind bars for a decade or two.

I am bemused by the decision to release him but trust that there must be a sound legal-footing for doing so otherwise there would have been a robust challenge mounted......

Hopefully, there will be sufficient fresh evidence uncovered to ensure that he spends another lengthy stretch behind bars.

My very first cell mate back in 1994 was a complete charmer who turned out to be an animal. At the time he was remanded for a minor arson. Some years later, he got an 8 year sentence for raping an 18 yr old girl (he was 45 at the time). Some years after that he was in the local paper again for charges of keeping a brothel and voyeurism...he had set up secret cameras to record 'activities'.
During my short stay with him as a cell mate, my abiding memory was of someone who actually hated women and was obsessed with sex, and yet could turn on the charm when it suited, he was always the 'gent' with the female screws but back in the cell he would talk about what he would like to do to them given half the chance.

I'm completely at a loss as to why someone would want to keep a signed photo of a convicted rapist.

He wasn’t a convicted rapist when I met him, he was actually my 21st birthday gift from the punters of the pub I was managing at the time! But hey hope you all feel better having a pop!
