kvalidir, I heard his speech.

ichkeria, you’re right insofar as any mention of Hitler is treading on dodgy ground.

It strikes me that here is a man who is wholly condemning the alleged actions of Assad in the strongest terms possible, in effect ‘worse than Hitler’, so to all intents and purposes, is doing absolutely the right thing, and yet because his comments are grossly and very deliberately misconstrued, he ends up the bad guy. Funny old world.
Thanks Mod !
// I didn’t hear what the OP and the rest of the enraged appear to have chosen to hear.//

even Hitler you know didnt use chemical weapons on people

and you are right about "choosing to hear" - showing an admirable open mind to the subject before learning the facts. The microphones were directional and so the unbelieving sniggers and gasps of surprise in real time do not come out clearly. He (seanie) is heckled in real time inaudibly.

I actually dont blame poor old Sean
The Land of the Free was never bombed - but my god it didnt stop them flattening Japan.
My father was in an Oflag ( lazarett actually oops sorry Ni) and
s/o much later (nineties) said -" Oh he was in a concentration camp * ?"
and I said "no he was a prisoner of war and in a camp for them. Prisoners of war werent really put in concentration camps ** as the British said they would shoot anyone who did."
and she followed up with " so how did he escape being gassed ?"
and I said " Central London! have you walked about central London there are some very beautiful squares to see..."

Notes * - or konzentrationslager - see here
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konzentrationslager

** altho some were - the Great Escapers from Stag Luft III ( oops soooorry Ni!) were reinterned in Sachsenhausen

So I felt sorry for poor old Sean
his history course clearly didnt involve European History ( where's that for chrissakes ? and do we have shares there ?)
and I think in real time when the sniggers start ..... Sean now knows that Something Awful is Gonna Happen - - - Soon !
> It strikes me that here is a man who is wholly condemning the alleged actions of Assad in the strongest terms possible, in effect ‘worse than Hitler’

Correct.

> and yet because his comments are grossly and very deliberately misconstrued, he ends up the bad guy.

Incorrect. His comments have not been "misconstrued". He said that Hitler did not gas his own people, when he did. Spicer showed himself, yet again (as is inevitable in his circumstances), to be completely unsuitable for the role he is in.
And Livingstone is being treated badly, in the same circumstances IMHO.
"He was talking about the sort of attacks Assad is employing."

Even then it's still clearly wrong, though.

Granted, Assad is the bad guy here; Spicer's comments merely show him to be incompetent, and they're very ill-judged (and, as mentioned, very wrong).

Still, he's apologised unreservedly, which is a first for this administration, so that's something.
Ellipsis
Incorrect. His comments have not been "misconstrued".

SEAN SPICER DENIES HITLER GASSED JEWS DURING THE HOLOCAUST.

Did he deny it ... really?
Talbot....no, of course he didn't !

But people are using this as an excuse not to debate the real issue....of Assads' continuing inhumanity to innocent people.
In my opinion Spicer was intending to comment that 'even Hitler didn't drop chemical bombs on the German people' a direct comparison with Assad dropping chemical bombs on the Syrian people. It wasn't supposed to be a comment on the entirety of Hitler's campaign against European Jews.
Spicer obviously needs a better speech-writer...

His 'holocaust centres' strike me as a chap who was momentarily struggling to find the correct terminology and came out with something crass....

Antisemitic? Possibly.....but not on this evidence.
Buffoon?.......that's the more likely explanation.
What really gets me about this whole saga is why massacring civilians is somehow less unacceptable if it's using "normal" weapons like guns, or just burning down churches and houses with hundreds of people inside. Why should the method matter if the outcome is the same? The victims of Hitler's war atrocities ended up just as dead, and in far greater numbers.
In what way could Spicer's comments possibly be anti-semitic ?

A storm in a tea cup IMHO.

People need to watch his comments again...here is the BBC link for anybody that missed it last time ::::

jackthehat at 10:12, precisely.

Mikey, Livingstone’s comments bear no resemblance to this. Livingstone is an ignorant man but his accusers should have done their homework before getting their knickers in a knot over it. They've proven themselves as ignorant as he is.
I agree jim.
Undoubtedly (I don't really want to get into another deep discussiin about Syria) the chemical attack in 2013 (and the subsequent failure of the "good guys" to do anything) was actually used by both Russia and Syria to mount a very noble-sounding but completely bogus operation to get rid of chemical weapons (we now know it was not achieved, deliberately or otherwise). During this time, while we were all congratulating ourselves (and them) for this great humanitarian effort, Assad continued - in fact possibly even intensified - his "conventional" murders.
I am going too stick my neck out here, and say that its about time the world concentrated on a future Syria, WITHOUT Assad.

He has shown himself to be entirely unsuitable to lead a modern country.
Ichi; //He's certainly an idiot.
Dragging up the name of Hitler in these situations is most unwise,...//
Yes that has become true; you could say that there was barely a person on the planet in the second half of the 20th cent. (and arguably still today) whose life wasn't effected by Hitler, and yet his name cannot be mentioned - extraordinary!
I listen to some commentators talking about this and despair:
"We should stop baiting Russia", "We are right to try to help them find a way out of this 'awkward' situation' with Assad". etc. As if somehow Putin is fundamentally a decent person whom geopolitics has led into an unholy alliance with a ruthless dictator. I guess diplomacy prohibits people like Tillerson and Johnson saying so explictly, but plainly Assad and Putin are two of a kind.
And that ex-UK ambassador to Damascus? Wow!!

Anyway, getting back to Spicer, you could tell halfway through that he realised he'd said something daft: he might, had he been a bit quicker, have immediately then underlined that he was NOT implying Holocaust denial, as plainly we wasn't. But he's apologised at least, which is something.
Mikey, //its about time the world concentrated on a future Syria, WITHOUT Assad. //

I've asked this question several times without much of a response from anyone, but what do you envisage Syria without Assad to look like?
///...and yet his name cannot be mentioned - extraordinary!///

No-one said that. It's just that if you are going to draw comparisons using Hitler, you'd better be sure that they stand up to scrutiny; which wasn't the case here.
"I've asked this question several times without much of a response from anyone, but what do you envisage Syria without Assad to look like? "

Untrue. I have repeatedly responded to that by saying that you are asking people to solve the Syrian crisis on answerbank. Patently unfair, and, indeed, a copout
ichkeria, not untrue at all. You have said you don't know which doesn't answer the question. If you're supporting the removal of Assad without any notion of what the future may hold for Syria, that is indeed a cop out.
